A French naval fleet arrived in Qingdao, a port city in east China's Shandong province, Friday morning for joint naval exercises with the North China Sea Fleet of the People's Liberation Army Navy to be held on March 16.

The two-warship fleet with 322 crew members aboard includes an anti-submarine-warfare destroyer Latouche-Treville and a light frigate Commandant Birot.

Chinese guided missile destroyer Harbin, replenishment ship Hongze Lake and shipboard helicopter Dolphin will work with the French warships for the first naval drills in the nontraditional security area between China and France.

The five-day tour is the twelfth visit made by French warships to China and the fourth to Qingdao, the base of the North China Sea Fleet.

Louis De Contenson, navy commander of the French Pacific Military Region, will arrive in Qingdao for the exercises.

The one-day exercise includes ship and shipboard helicopter tactic maneuvers, replenishment exercises at sea and communication as well as search-and-rescue exercise.

An official with the Chinese Defense Ministry said the joint exercise is a sign of the good Sino-French relations. Chinese President Hu Jintao had just paid a successful state visit to France and the two countries celebrated the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, he said, adding that the joint drill will further the state-to-state and military-to-military relations between the two countries.

In these troubled times its not surprising to see some odd partners, there has been a few rumours that the SAS and MI5 had been training Pakistans ISI the same agency who may have helped OBL in the past.
I think we will see the US and the UK cooperate with China in military matters in the future, Germany is supposed to have a ELINT monitoring base in western China.

China and the US cooperating militarily?

Did you forget about this?

A U.S. Navy EP-3E Aries II spy plane was forced to land inside China on Sunday after colliding with a People's Liberation Army Air Force jet fighter 62 miles southeast of Hainan Island.

If it occurred it would be superficial and for PR purposes only. The US Pacific Command is doing a force realignment to counteract the expanding Chinese military as we speak and it is not for friendly relations.

China is modifying short-range mobile missiles to target U.S. forces in Okinawa and is sharply increasing the number of missiles aimed at Taiwan, according to the Pentagon's latest annual report on Chinese military power.

The Chinese are working on a medium-range missile that will give Beijing the ability to launch attacks against the 25,000 U.S. troops deployed on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. The new missiles also will be able to hit Taiwan from bases farther inland from the Chinese coast, the report said.

Along with building new intercontinental ballistic missiles, China may abandon its pledge not to be the first to use nuclear arms in a conflict. Beijing is "reconsidering" how it would use nuclear weapons "against U.S. forces in the region," the report said.

The report also warns that China is building up its "information warfare" forces in preparation for a conflict over Taiwan, which President Bush has vowed to defend from Chinese attack.

Beijing has adopted a new strategy of what Beijing military planners call "assassin's mace" arms — advanced weapons designed for use against U.S. forces.

Current "assassins maces" that could trump advanced U.S. weapons include fighter bombers, submarines, antiship missiles, and mines that could attack U.S. aircraft carriers.

"Chinese doctrine continues to emphasize surprise, deception, and shock effect in the opening phase of a campaign," the report said.

China's military buildup has led the Pentagon to quietly build up its military forces in the Pacific in recent months. Attack submarines have been deployed in Guam, along with stockpiles of air-launched cruise missiles. Bombers also have been moved to the region to deal with either a conflict in Korea or possibly a war over Taiwan, defense officials said.

The US has completed the transfer of two dozen B-1 bombers and six B-52s to Guam under orders signed by US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to beef up the protection of Taiwan and as a deterrent to North Korea.

US already sold satelites to China...

All but a few Democrats joined the majority Republicans in a series of nearly unanimous votes to ban the technology exports. The votes were a stinging rebuke to the Clinton White House after allegations that Democratic campaign contributions had influenced the Clinton administration to waive a 1989 ban and allow civilian satellite technology to be sold to China.

Disgraced former President Clinton gave Loral Space & Communications Ltd. a permit to have one of its satellites launched by a Chinese rocket. The company allegedly provided technology to help in the launch that the Chinese might have used for military purposes. Bernard Schwartz, chief executive officer of Loral, gave $632,000 to the Democrats during the 1996 election campaign.

I sincerely hope that this is a ELINT gathering exercise by the French and not a sign of another French axis against the USA.

The last thing I'm aware of was a Shanghai port vist for 2 days last month by the US Pacific Fleet C&C ship Blue Ridge.

Strange ehh?

But I think it's likely that a lot of "weird" military exercise/cooperation events will be occurring in coming years.

For example......the US is providing assistance to the Indonesian Military/Special Forces....even though they were accused in recent years of government sanctioned atrocities in East Timor, amongst other places.....

but now that AQ and it's allies are a main threat, and a threat based in Indonesia...that all goes out the window......

because the US wants/needs better access to the region...

that's but one example of seemingly strange foreign policy in Asia/Pacific region.

Disgraced? I don't know if you are old enough to remember this but:

The Senate conducted the second impeachment trial only of a President in the 209-year history of the United States.

William Jefferson Clinton was impeached on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice today by a divided House of Representatives, which recommended virtually along party lines that the Senate remove the nation's 42d President from office. The House of Representatives approved, 228 to 206, the first article of impeachment and a second article of impeachment, charging Mr. Clinton with obstruction of justice, passed on a narrower vote of 221 to 212.

There is the Anglo-American Military Axis and there is the Franco-German-Russian Military Axis.

The same kind of exchanges goes with several non Western Navies. To me this is a non event.

True, the French are willing more strong ties with the Chinese because of potential trade development. They are bending a lot -with few success as usual. The way the Prime Minister was invited to France recently was ridiculous. The Chinese are not stupid, they know they could have a lot more from the USA, Germany or Italy for example. But the current French government is playing it's role as an alternative to the USA (you now know my opinion on that point...) and gives out a lot for ...a very few benefit :(
