It's a Helmet, General Use, (Mark 7).
Seriously though, (and I'm not positive) it looks like the kind of helmet SEALs wore in the pre MICH era. That's something I heard, not something I witnessed with my own eyes.

I was kinda waiting for that ;) Someone suggested to me that these were produced by Gentex at some point, but I couldn't find any further info...

Yeah I kinda agree with you there. Or it could of been a prototype PASGT helmet?

Ask rokdoc. He works in Natick (the US Army's research & development lab for equipment and gear), he'll probably know.

This helmet is used by the Navy, it's basically a kevlar hard hat. The liner looks like a typical hard hat liner, you twist the knob on the back to adjust it.

This is the helmet that replaced the old WWII talkers helmet on Destroyers and GMC's.
It's NOT a 'special ops' helmet. It is a ship-board safety helmet. Note the "hard-hat" style suspencion and notional chin strap.
The "special ops" helmet reffered to above is the MICH by MSA or the TBH II by Gentex.

I thought the Talker Mk2 was replaced by the Mk4 and Mk5 Talkers. These are very similar to the WWII Talker with big ears for the comms but made out of kevlar.
The Mk7 pictured above is a general use helmet for the US NAvy, especially for supply vesslels. I have one made by Gentex. The MK7 has no room for comms.
This is a pic of the new Talker I found on the web:

These are used by the Belgian Navy as well (in the same function as explained above)
