UNITED NATIONS
To the strains of "Hail to the Chief," actress Geena Davis accepted an award night for her television portrayal of the first woman president of the United States from an organization which is seeking to turn fiction into reality.

When the star of the ABC television show "Commander in Chief" got to the podium Tuesday, she was given a red, white and blue sash to put on over her gown, similar to one worn by Chile's first woman president, Michelle Bachelet. "This is the coolest thing I ever got! Wow I love it!," she said.
"So many countries have had a female head of state (http://216.133.241.229/q?s=%22head+of+state%22&sid=breitbart.com) before us," she told the 500 guests at a dinner in the U.N. Delegates Dining Room. "So it is certainly time."

The award was presented by The White House Project, a non-profit organization which works to promote women's voting, political participation and leadership, with a goal of putting a woman in the White House.
"Every interviewer eventually says, `Do you think we will see a female president in our lifetime?', Davis said.

"I think it's appalling that we haven't yet. The crime is not that it's taken so long, but why haven't we done it yet?" she said to loud applause from the predominantly female audience that included Martha Stewart and former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
Davis, who plays President Mackenzie Allen, said she was thrilled and honored to receive the award because she cares so much about empowering girls and women.

"Year in and year out there are real-life gains being made by women, but there is still a huge gender disparity," she said. "It really shows up in my industry. For every president Allen, there are a hundred never-rans. There are fewer (women) victors than victims. There are fewer (women) leaders than followers, fewer women than men, and fewer girls than boys."
But "if elected to another season _ un term," Davis said to more laughter, "... whatever I can do to make change happen quicker in the fake world, I promise to do."

>snip<

"Females represent 51 percent of the country and it's absurd that they're not represented in the highest level of power, and not even given that opportunity," Lurie said.

But he said things may be changing.

"There's a lot of firepower in the world ladies and gentelmen," Lurie said. "There's lots of it, but there's no weapon as powerful as an idea whose time has come."
Marie Wilson, president of the White House Project, said the EPIC Awards acknowledge the power of media and popular culture, and she thanked Davis and Lurie "for bringing the concept of a female president to life, and doing it so well."

Anita Hill, who accused Clarence Thomas of ****** harassment during 1991 hearings on his nomination to the Supreme Court, presented another award to Jeff Skoll, founder of Participant Productions for making "North Country," a movie about courageous women who led a fight against ****** harassment in Minnesota mines, "I for one am thankful that we live in an age where we have role models like Anita Hill to show us the way forward," Skoll said. "We're also grateful that the White House Project" is working to see that a woman becomes president.

Honest to God. I didn't know where to put this slice of Hollywood/UN idiocy - rants or OT. It's like they got together and had a "who gives a sh*t" circle jerk. If only we had a "Sad and Pointles" section.

As a bonus, ABC canned the sorry "Commander in Chief" sho - it sucking so very badly that they're not even going to air the remaining few unshown episodes. They'll sneak them in during the summer when nobody notices.

So why didn't they give the award to Mary McDonnell? Becuase she did portray a female president on Battlestar Galactica before Davis did. Then again, it is the UN, it's not worth the headache trying to figure them out.

A sad and pointless section on mp.net would swallow them, and most of the topics on the board :-)

Gets an award for beeing an actor playing the president ?

Michael Douglas will likely be very upset he didnt get any of that.

They probably did it at the UN Building to make it sound more important.

Also I think the President of the 12 Colonies does not count ;)

I find it very strange that an organisation would promote electing a president based on gender. The Parties will select the best candidate they can offer and the voters will decide then.
I donīt remember female heads of governments beeing put in office by angry feminists.

Edit:

Yes, I think Harrison Ford was pretty pissed since he saved the Air Force 1 and everything.

That is a HUGE CIRCLE JERK!!!! The UN has shown once again that they are controlled by monkeys drunk on the blood of others who they have failed to protect.

I'm glad to see that the UN is doing something. The UN was a great idea, but seems to be pretty much worthless now

Rod Lurie, I'm ashamed to admit is my West Point classmate. It's like he was asleep for 4 years. His movies sucked, his two attempts at TV sucked, just liberal drivel. No wonder he is successful in Hollyweird...

Gina Davis for President...at least she has bigger b*lls than Martin Sheen...

My wife works for the UN, and I say the same to her all the time.. but in the end, it's the member states that deside what the UN does, and doesn't do...

I bet the money spent on marketing analysis for what color outfit Gina’s going to wear next episode could pay for raining vaccines and happy meals on half of Africa. Imagine what they could do with the budget of one or two episodes?
Pah! Hollywood mind control crap.

Yack Spit!

Mary McDonnell could ruin Geena Davis's **** and then throw her ass out the airlock.

Mary McDonnell also plays a far more convincing and noble presidential figure in a more realistic manner than what is portrayed on Commander-in-chief.

Oh wow a woman president how special! Get over yourselves, notice how you did a great service to women's rights and making the possibility of having a woman president a reality by getting your crappy show canceled after the first season.
