The US is funding a coalition of Somali warlords who earlier this year battled Islamic groups in Mogadishu, Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf has said.

Mr Yusuf's spokesman said the funding was fuelling Somalia's civil war.

At least 70 people were killed in the worst violence seen in the Somali capital for several years, when the two groups clashed in March.

US officials refused to comment directly but one said they did not want terror to take root in the region.

Somalia has not had an effective national authority for 15 years.

Reports that the US was operating in Somalia have been circulating for some time, but this is the first time someone so senior has commented on them.

The US has supported a large number of freaks. And 9 times outta 10 has ended up hunting them down (ie Saddam).

Yeah true but till you have to hunt them down, you can use them as a tool.

I just picked up a book today in a second hand store..Its Combat Guns printed in 1987.Saddam is our buddy...The Afgan Rebels were still our buddies and It talks about East German Special Forces using US uniforms and Equipment captured in Vietnam to infiltrate NATO lines.......The L85 was sappose to be the base for all future weapons designs etc etc..It shows West German Snipers taking out Soviet Para-Troops......If you can remember a Cold War situation this book talks about it....Now I really miss it...Depressing...I think Ill get naked and sit in the corner with the lights out for a few hours...
