British National Party supporters claim it is "on its way" after doubling its number of councillors in England.
The biggest gains were in Barking and Dagenham, where it seized 11 of the 13 seats it contested, becoming the second party. One ward has still to declare.
The BNP also won seats in Epping Forest, Stoke-on-Trent and Sandwell.
The party fielded more than 350 candidates and now has 44 seats in England. Before Thursday's local elections it held about 20 of 22,000.

The BNP has become the second party in Barking and Dagenham
Hodge criticised
Barking Labour MP Margaret Hodge has been criticised for saying during the campaign that 80% of white families in the area were "tempted" by the BNP.
Labour officials are said to be considering disciplinary action against her, claiming her comments had helped bring about the Barking results.
Barking and Dagenham is the first council in the country to have the BNP as the second-biggest party.
It also picked up three seats in Stoke-on-Trent, where Labour lost overall control, and three more in Sandwell in the Black Country.
It took a further three in Epping Forest, in east London.

Apparently not they haven't really done any better than in the last local elections in 2004

From the 20 seats they held before yesterday’s elections, it was predicted they would receive a large amount of protest vote. They have more than doubled their previous council seats. That’s a gain.

Doubling of a very small number is still a very small number

They only had around 350 candidates running. For an extreme political group like the BNP to come out with 44 seats is a substantial gain.

I have to agree with Fee, any gain for an extreme right wing group is a gain.

Well they've just slightly increased the very small amount of rope they have to hang themselves with. They're only going to make fools of themselves when they get into the council meetings :)

Questino: Are Epping Forest, Stoke-on-Trent and Sandwell rural cities?
'Cos I've read (here and on the Net in general) that BNP has gained power in the countryside during the last years.

Barking is East London, I went to Raindance there on my 21st B'day, May 11th 91.
I felt like a fish out of water in that area, somewhat different to West London, hard to explain.
Sorry, back on topic.

Stoke-on-Trent is a medium sized city in the Midlands. Officially the poorest urban area in the UK. High unemployment and run by a totally useless Old Labour clique since time immemorial. Recently used as a dumping ground for large numbers of Albanian crims which explains the local rise of the BNP.

BNP tends to be popular in areas were people don't spend much time thinking. There are many areas of GB which are largely populated by very ignorant people who claim that other ethnic groups are depriving them of jobs that are rightfully theirs. They also blame different races for the high levels of crime in their neighbourhoods. BNP tend to do well in these areas.

Actually there are only a vanishingly small number of areas of the UK in which BNP candidates have managed to get council seats.
