View Full Version : Map Pouch - Question

I'm just full of questions, and bullsh*t. :)

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good, relatively low profile MOLLE pouch that can be used for maps? ADMIN pouches are too small. Perhaps someone made one that's like a shingle that could hold a folded up map, about 8 by 8 inches square? I'm done with cramming maps into pockets or under my BDU top or whatever.

Thanks guys, sorry for all the damn questions.

Damn it Skor... you sound like a n00b! p-)

On a more serious note i´m using this mapfolder and cram it in my legpocket.

I´m more used to have it in my uniform rather in my combat vest.

chuck it down your smock in a ziplock freezer bag.

Kit is great, but initiative is better

Or put it in an ortlieb map case and have a dry, useable map.

The ziplocs don't always close in sand or ice. :-( I got two new thick bags from some company in Washington, and the big one is what I've been using, and I like it. Costs about $8.00 and looks like it'll last awhile as long as it isn't left in the baking sun.

Here's what I've been using:

The bigass ziploc-type bag at the bottom is what I like the most so far. I can't find a good pouch that fits it well, without being overly huge. I can put it into the kinda net-backing thing on the inside of my chest rig, but then it's a bitch to remove the map. I'd put it in my BDU trouser pockets on the sides, but it would probably get torn up from the foliage around where I train.

All that burned down dead foliage tears the living sh*t out of clothing.

ADAM WILHELM: That looks similar to what I've got. Is it waterproof? Mine has a waterproof front, but they didn't waterproof the back nylon portion for some reason, and they used velcro to close the deal so it's only sweat resistant.

EAST SCOUT: What did he do?

BLARNEY: Thanks for the PM.

Anyone have anything to say about these ENDOM shingles?
http://stores.skipjack.com/emdomusa/Detail.bok?no=9
They look like they might fit the bill, but I'm afraid that if I place it on my rig in between the rig itself and have a mag pouch on the outside, it might sag. I guess I could cut a slice ov MRE cardboard to go in there to shore it up eh?

Thanks for the help guys!

Mate, have a look at Ortlieb's map/document cases.

http://www.ortliebusa.com/

Ortlieb map cases must be used by 90% of british soldiers. They cost about $25 but nothing short of burning or stabbing will damage them, and they are water tight (or as close as you can get).

That looks the best so far! Looks like a winner.

SABRE: I'll hafta pick up one of them Ortlieb cases too. I like how it has more lanyard points on it so I don't get choked if I wear it around my neck under my BDU top.

Thanks!

And they work a lot better than a ziplock bag!

I like the map pouch from Best Made Designs.. comes with two waterproof pouches inside, and the thing folds up really well. Or you could do what we did back in my day. You go down to Office Depot. You already pre cut up your map according to the grid squares. I believe that we would go with the 1/50,000 scales military maps, and cut them along the grid lines with 5 click by 5 clicks in size. then you lay them back in order on the bottom sheet of laminate plastic just away from each other.. no touching but close.. then run them thru the machine.. once it's finishde and cooled, leaving about a 1 cm border on the outside of the map sheet, you cut away excess.. then you can fold the waterproof map up the way you need to.. With the standard size military maps, you could easely carry one in you BDU pants cargo pocket.. theere's only one exception to this that i know of, and that's the two fvcking very large range maps of Ft. Irwin (NTC).. you could do what you wanted, that map will not fit in your fvcking leg pocket.. and there are two of them.. Iremember planing ops having to use both maps where they meet at "The Whale" and the "The whale Gap", and nothern ridge line.. was a big pain in the ass... I would just carry one in my shirt folded up.. and the other in my Rucksack.. When I got out, I gave them to one of my NCOs.. he almost had a hard on.... because we almost never get those maps...

I'm afraid to cut up my maps so far. Plus mine are in imperial measurement only. :|

The ALOKSAK ones that BMD/SOB has are pretty nice. I think I'll order one from work for cheap, just to see how it runs.

Hey MrSkorotsnoy,

I use the BHI map pouch for my maps, works pretty good! I stick it inside my BDU or in a SAW pouch that's used for various items to be carried in.
A friend of mine sticks the pouch behind the upper flap of his chest webbing, but it's sometimes hard to get it out of there in a hurry.

If you find a good solution, let me know ;)

Hold tight, just got back from work and stuff! Sending the info, thanks!

Percell: I sometimes put my maps in the inside section of my chest rig, but have since sorta abandoned using my chest rig for any terain with inclines in it. As you said it can be a pain to remove, unless it's small.

Skor, the mapcase wich i´m is using is NOT waterproof, just waterresistant. p-)

But this is bloody waterproof:

Link to Seal-line (http://www.seallinegear.com/all_purpose.asp?Action=MapCase&Category=AllPurpose)

I´m using the big one when i´m kayaking and i´m probably is going to buy a smaller one for maps.

Ortlieb is also teh shiete. :)

Skor, you should change your nick to Taco, just for your love of mexian cuisine.

I wouldn't trust the seal-line bags. The stiched seams are a weak point and if you look where they meet the zip lock there is often a gap, or a gap can form there. That's what happened with mine.

Nothing's 100% waterproof, but Ortlieb is the best by far.

Agree 100%

Skort - If you've picked up a chest rig as you were saying it'll fit in the map pocket on the back ;), failing that it goes in a grab bag, in the zip pockets of your vest (UK PLCE vest) or the leg pockets of your trousers/pants.

For local area stuff/air or sat phots - cut them down and get a smaller Ortleib bag and keep them in the chest or shoulder pocket of your shirt/smock.
