*Old Pic/November 26, 2003 * German soldiers with assault rifles guard a runway on the airfield in Kundus. Due to a shortage of army vehicles the German forces started using rented civil cars, which are then marked with a German flag and the word 'German' written in Arabic. About 100 Bundeswehr soldiers will support relief organisations in Kundus in theanti-terror mission 'Enduring Freedom'. The number of soldiers involved was to be increased to 250 in the coming months.

Oregon Gov.Ted Kulongoski makes the sign of the cross after placing a coin on a memorial at the funeral of Oregon National Guard Staff Sgt. Kevin Davis in Lebanon, Ore., April 21, 2005. Whenever an Oregon soldier dies in Iraq or Afghanistan, Kulongoski makes it a point to attend the funeral service. He's been to dozens since the war began three years ago. I flew in a C-47 operated by a cargo outfit about 12 years ago. It's a loud ride with a lot of vibration.

Looks like the radials were replaced with turboprops ... still noisy nonetheless

Nope, TRG-42 ;)
Really; chambered in either .300 Win Mag or .338 Lapua to qualify (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Special_Commando_Regiment) as a TRG-42 rather than a 7.62x51mm TRG-22?
p-)

Holy crap! A C-47! Those things first flew in 1935.

There are two examples kept in flying condition by the Hellenic Air Force, the oldest aircraft still in regular Military service in the world. They form the core of the HAF's Historic Flight.

The guys shown in these pix with the HK53s are the CP detail for Lt. Gen Rob Fry. As Lt. Gen. Fry is an RM officer serving in an MoD role, it is most likely that these guys are from the CP Troop RMP, but they could possible by from Police Troop Royal Marines.

I saw the most surreal footage yesterday about the copter crash in Basra:

A cat climbing on the suspended and smoldering wreckage of the copter!

I first thought it was a creature from hell screwing around. It was incredible. Firemen were trying to extinguish the fire on what I think was the wreckage of the turbine of the copter, hanging on the air between two buildings. A cat, half-burnt, half-wet was climbing it!

I don't know why but it really shocked me. We have become so used to the scenes of bombings and firefights that this particular scene really drove home the horror of war.

Anybody else saw that??

RIP to the dead.
