Does any of you guys have pics of marines/army guys searching streets in Iraq with M16A2/3.. and with its stock over their shoulder because it's too long?

I have seen here many pics like that, but can't find anything anymore, no matter how hard I try... =\

Thanks a lot.

its not because the stock is too long, its a technique called 'short stocking' it was discussed back on the old forum, this technique is used because a lot of the time the full length m16(a2,a3,a4) is too long to be effectively used in CQB and because the recoil of 5.56 is managable short stocking the rifle is an option, its used a lot by marines i noticed.

Yep.. original A2 stock is not too long if you are at range shooting stationary targets at known distance. If you do things other than that, it's going to be too long. Especially when you have all your equipment (+ more) with you.

If it wasn't too long, there would not be a technique like that. =)

I just would like to find one or two pictures like that.

Even the A1 length stock won't do for that -- put together the IBA, 20" Barrel, and you're willing to sacrifice so that you can even move in MOUT situations.

I know exactly what you are talking about but don't have any pics in my collection. I remember discussing it here way back, but that thread is no more.

I didn't know the Marines were still using the A2...? I thought they'd switched completely to the A4 model.

The marines still have A2s but mainly for support and other non-infantry

what Ol'Bob said.

even the Army switched to the A2/A3/M4 but you can still see a lot of M16/M16A1

Don't the canucks have a retract stock(like the M4s) on their M16 knockoffs?(sorry if I'm steering the thread off course)

When I wore the IBA/OTV and I used the M16..I short stocked it on occasion..however having that extra length of barrel is just a tad more comforting when you have to whack someone slightly out there..

We have the Canadian "M16 knock off" (as you all, or is it y'all? call it) C7A2. It has the C8 (M4) butt that is retractable, yes. Do a google search for it, you should find lots of goodies.

odd..what I'm wondering..why aren't US units doing this with their A3 and A4 M16 variants..(considering the body armor and Length of Pull that gets messed up when wearing the IBA) the M4 is nice for MOUT work..but for patrolling outside of town/s..it's nicer having that much more barrel.
Question: has anyone seen an American soldier with a modified M16 similar to the Canadian setup?..M16 20" barrel with a M4 stock?

Installing M4 buttstock in M16 would also take replacing normal M16 upper receiver extension (the buffer tube in buttstock) and buffer - those two are shorter in M4. Im not sure if installing them wouldnt affect M16 functioning. I guess cyclic rate would increace, due to shorter recoiling group travel, unless M4 buffer is considerably heavier (some of weights inside are made of wolfram instead of steel). Wonder if anyone tried it?

On the USMC Side, its because some higher up decided that the USMC was going to use the full length A4, and they bought a ****load of them.

The canadian C7A2 (and C9A2, for that matter) were a thought out improvement on their predecessors (as opposed to OTS) and so feature retractable stocks.*

* A massive generalisation, but i reckon its most of the way there p-)
