Anyone can clue me in the proper methods for cleaning these buggers. I am guessing handwashing and hang dry, but are they okay in the washing machine or dryer or need something else?

DO NOT PUT THEM IN A MACHINE! You can use a mild soap like hand soap and hand wash them in a bucket with a wash cloth..OR you can lay them out on some fluffy grass and use a broom with real soft brissles and lightly scrub it...and hose it off....If it has the mildew smell you might wanna check and see if its started to rot........

Also look at the side thats coated and see if its started to peel off anywhere,,sure sign of rot....if it has, chances are the coating/sealent around the hood is krapped out too and will leak on you........

If you just bought it, and it smell like vomit, that's the powder they put on them... it will take a few times to clean that off. I use my bath tube to wash mine.. that is if I wash it.. normally, I hang it out to dry, and sweep off any dry dirt, and then fold it back up, and put it back in my rucksack...

You can use a mild soap like was said by soldier...

I throw mine in the washing machine and hang them to dry. Same with the wet weather gear. In fact, everything but the rucksack frame, e-tool, and canteen cup goes in the washing machine. :D
