Cuba, Saudi Arabia, China and Russia won seats on the new UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday despite their poor human-rights records, but two rights abusers--Iran and Venezuela--were defeated.
Human-rights groups said they generally were pleased with the 47 members elected to the council, which will replace the highly politicized Human Rights Commission. It was discredited in recent years because some countries with terrible rights records used their membership to protect one another from condemnation.
The United States opposed the establishment of the council, saying it did not go far enough to prevent rights abusers from winning seats, and the U.S. decided against being a candidate.

This could give them incentive to improve Human Rights. Also there is a difference between actual Human rights abuses and just having an oppressive government...Democracy isnt a human right

With this membership, they will probably spend all their time slamming the USA on Gitmo and Abu Grabe (sp?). If any actual human rights work gets done, it will be a shock.

ive got a feeling thats the whole point. Sabotage the body right from the outset so nothing has to be acted on.
A example was the pressure on the UN not to find dafur a case of genocide which would mean action and too much confrontation.

Talk about overreacting.
Cuba, Saudi Arabia, China and Russia
They are not that bad actually relative to other states. We certainly have no problems buying their products. And no outrage that China and Russia are nuclear states with veto rights in the UN security council.
If the requirement among the hypocrites is that all nations have to be spot clean then I suppose the HR council would be rather empty.
