Explosive Ordnance Disposal, they could be going on raids to potentially take care of any ****y (hehe) traps that the Charlie may be unfamiliar with....just speculation though. EOD was never on any raids that I went on...

He could be the 18C (SF engineer), he does seem better equipped than most of the EOD soldiers I worked with, but that's just a guess.....

You guys kill me. Yes, that's an Explosive ORDNANCE Disposal technician. He is not an 18C - 18C's are NOT EOD techs. He's probably a Navy tech (based on his gear) doing SOF support.

Ha! I did spell it ord-i-nance the first time.

Well thanks for the answer. Why do you think Navy?

OK so who is the A2 guy then... btw why this POW has a glowstic on him??? to find him if he fell of the plane? ;)

Because of the Fact he's carrying an M-4 with all the goodies, MICH helmet, chest harness, etc.

The Navy is currently the branch that is specifically tasked for EOD SOF support.

Army techs in the 'Stan and Iraq have performed, and are performing SOF support, but on an Ad Hoc basis. Our role in SOF support is evolving, but it will take time to see where it heads.

The problem with Army EOD doing SOF support is that even though it's a really "cool" mission profile that we should be involved in, we still have a huge resposibility to the rest of the conventional Army for EOD support(IED/UXO response, UXO disposal, etc.). A misson that we have about 1200 Techs to perform (of which only a portion can be deployed in theater at one time).

That doesn't include all the other missions Army EOD has to constantly support stateside like Secret Service support, WMD response units, TEU, Base/range support ops, off post EOD support to Law enforcement - and on, and on.

Marmot,

I don't know what A2 designates, other than a visual ID for whatever his function/position on that job was.

Marmot,

The lightstick is probably because the Op was at night, and the lightstick was a good way to keep track of him until they bundled his ass onto the bird.

ref: the light stick -

it creates easy ID of the PUC. When looking w/nod (or without) an 3 dudes are coming towards you it is not always so easy to determine who is who, w/everything going on. This makes it pretty idiot proof to determine in a snap who the PID/puc/epw/detainee is.

Didn't know that. All the "sexy" gear was what had me thinking he was a 18C but then why would he have an EOD tag?? Thanks for the explanation.

Did you do any work in A-stan as EOD?

Beowulf,
When I was in Bosnia, a local woman on base asked me what I did for SFOR, so I told her. She looked at me, shook her head and said "No second chance". I like it even better than "ISorTF". ;)

these guys are from ODA 511,the No.s and letters are individual identifiers, something like Zap Numbers, according to a guy I know from the 5th SFG he said they were not really common on Ops.
His ODA 555 never wore them at all.
He's seen this pic before and his comment was that perhaps this was a "high profile" snatch and grab involving many different SOF elements.......hence the "Identifiers"

Argyll,
amazing how that makes perfect operational sense. :D Thanx for the info.

Marmot,
18C, 18D, 18B, etc. are all codes for SF Millitary Occupational Specialties. 18C is the Engineer. I'm sure someone here can explain it in even greater detail.

The lightsticks are IR and are only visible throught their NVG's, there's one on the TURD so they don't
A. lose him in the dark if they get hit
B. Don't shoot him instead! LOL

I will have to agree with EODSGT on the Navy thing. He looks somewhat wrong for Army SF. Although, our 18 series EOD dude wore something that ID'd him as EOD so the Rangers and such would know who to fetch.

The A2 patch is something that I saw the Ranger commanders wearing a lot. It was just and ID'er for them within their own groups. We commonly traveled with a small group of Rangers for extra guns so that may be why he's their. The flag kind of gives him away a little as well.

Hey EODSGT, answer your PM's.

shrek
03-17-2004, 04:03 PM
Ok, after looking again I don't think the lightsticks on the EOD guy are IR. I wouldn't strap something to my chest that I could fall on and be lit up like a Christmas tree. Dun no?
