On Tuesday the newspaper office of Le Parisien recieved a letter from an islamic group which promiced a series of attacks
on France, and French people all over the world.

The group calls themselves "Mudjahadeens of Movsar Baraev", a chechen terrorist that organized a Moscow theater hostage situation
in 2002.

Terrorists adressed the letter to prime minister of France Jean-Pier Raffarin.

The newspaper staff contacted the anti-terrorist agency of French police to approve the authenticity of the letter.

To sum it up :

You are Infidels, friends of Russia that kill our brothers in Chechnya and the ugly Israel (.../...), part of Europe that supports America (.../...) we have many friends and supporters here in France (.../...) France went too far with the law against veils at schools and in public areas (.../...)we will strikes politicians and simple citizens alike(.../...) a blood bath is coming after 9/11 in the USA and 3/11 in Spain.

My opinion : this is written in excellent French (the person who wrote it seems to be very well educated) but with a lot af religious references that are difficult to understand...

Future will tell us if this was a (bad) joke or a real threat :(

Hummm, I was reading through the letter and its main theme and accusation to the French government revolves around the recent voting of the law banning the show of religious symbols (including the "hijab", the islamic veil worn by Muslim women) in schools and other educational institutions throughout France. They add that:

"with this odious, discriminatory and anti-Muslim law, you have proven to the entire world and to all Muslims that you are in fact siding with the Devil, and as such we shall treat you until Judgement Day, unless you disavow your decision and bow down to the orders of Allah, who is also your God"

They keep on rambling about the defiance of Charles Martel (Martel's Frankish army defeated the Arabs fighting to spread Islam in 732 after winning the famous "Battle of Tours"), the occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan, the detention of prisoners in Guantanamo etc. but they also mention the September 11th and March 11th attacks of the WTC and Madrid, which indicates that the letter is quite recent. They conclude the letter with an explicit threat to Prime Minister Raffarin urging him to revoke the new law or be prepared for the consequences. The authors of the letter identify themselves as Mosvar Baraev Commando (note that "Mosvar" is misspelled, it should read "Movsar"...it could be an intentional mistake or else the proof that whoever wrote the letter is an "amateur"....). I personally have strong doubts about the authenticity of the letter, apparently sent by an obscure terrorist group called "the Servants of Allah the Powerful and the Wise", besides it seems that the first page of the letter is merely a photocopy of a Coran's edition...
Finally, except for the reference to Baraev, I see no other link to Chechnya, although a passage of the letter states "your disbelieving brothers keep inflicting terrible sufferings upon our islamic brothers and sisters from Chechnya, you are the friends of the Russians and Israelis..." etc.

They made it sound like it was AQ in the news, but if it the chechens I find that really confusing. What have the french done to piss of the chechens?

Correctomundo. On the contrary, the French have been rather critical of Russia's presence in Chechnya, and several French reporters have actually published a lot of material in order to discredit and accuse Russia from the very beginning of the Chechen conflict...so this letter is indeed rather misleading...

Well if they do do anything, Russia hopefully will get full EU support.

One thing that is true, is that these terrorists are usually out of their mind. Their perception on reality is usually based in truth, but gets rather distorted by their leader. There isn't much sense in trying to rationalize what they're saying because there really isn't any way that we'd be able to give in enough to their demands to cut it out. They'd just find another reason to hate you.

Obviously we don't want that to happen at all, but indeed if it is proven that the people behind this obscure organization are either Chechens or in some way have ties to Chechnya, then it would be about time for the EU to abandon its "teenie-weenie" attitude towards terrorism (yes, did you hear that, you band of rat-bastard eurocrats sitting there in your cozy offices in Brussels, who never ever smelled the taste of gunpowder in your life???) and finally stop bashing Russia for what's happening in the Caucasus. And perhaps, but this is just wishful thinking...why not cooperate with Russian authorities to liquidate these bastards???

Russian doesn't want and won't accept anyone's help.

First the world bashes on us, and after 9-11 we get support?
Please....

I sometimes think if the Soviets wouldn't pull out of Afghanistan, and stayed there to calm the animals down, would 9-11 happen?

You're right, probably not...or maybe not in these proportions.
Isn't it ironic to acknowledge the fact that precisely the US who wanted so badly to kick the Soviets out of Afghanistan by supporting the Mujahedeens is now paying the price of having given rise to the Talibans, to Bin Laden, and as a consequence, to Al-Quaeda? But hey the CIA & Co. maybe couldn't imagine this at the time....

Are you sure there was an integrist danger in Afghanstan back in 1979??
I think it all was an action-reaction effect. But not only Afghanistan, Iran(Mossadeq, democratic president, replaced by a coup d´etat backed by west), etc, a complicated situation. I think that islamics integrist are in many ways more nationalists than fannatic religious, it´s not an easy matter.

"People of wine and pork, of libertinage and nudity".
Hell i'm not really offended by that :P

Disturbing and anyway, whatever the stand of France in foreign policy can be, fundamentalists will always hate it simply because it's an occidental country of infidels.
Another proof that we shouldn't stay in a false sense of security.

French PM is sent 'terror letter'

Mr Raffarin reportedly received the threats via Le Parisien newspaper
French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has received a letter from an unknown Muslim group that threatened to attack France, French officials say.
A group calling itself Servants of Allah, the Powerful and Wise One sent the message via Le Parisien newspaper.

Anti-terrorism police have taken on the official inquiry into the threats against France and French interests abroad, the justice ministry stated.

The threats came five days after train bombs in Madrid killed 201 people.

"It is obviously not yet possible to assess the worth of this message," said the justice ministry in a statement.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy told Agence France Presse news agency that experts were analysing the threats.

Mixed stories

The two-page letter was delivered to the newspaper's offices early on Tuesday, sources close to the investigation told AFP.

Both Le Parisien and Le Monde said the letter was signed "Mosvar Barayev commando".

The signature was similar to Movsar Barayev, the leader of a Chechen group that took hundreds hostage in a Moscow theatre in October 2002 - and died during the siege.

Le Parisien's news director Christian de Villeneuve told AFP that the letter "threatens France with reprisal attacks" following the adoption earlier this month of the law banning the wearing of headscarves in state schools.

US may piss them off by going to war with them but the French piss them off via thier domestic laws. Just goes to show no one is safe from terrorism. Europeans on average don't consider terrorism a threat, but it is, and they will realize only when its too late like in Madrid.

That's the problem: how do you deal with people who get's pissed off with almost anything that you do?

It's not just American foreign policy or French laws on head scarves. It's Britney Spears dancing with bared midriff. It's American TV shows. It's French fashion. It's banks charging interest rates. It's bikini babes sunning themselves at beach resorts in Muslim countries. It's ...

I could go on, but I think I made my point: Islamic radicals don't just hate the government and its policies. They hate the west's entire way of life.

the only way to really stop terrorism on US and European soil is to stop immigration. But then you have foreign interests to worry about.
