Great pictures!! woot
Does anyone have a picture of the Hind that was painted to look like an Eagle? I think it was a Hungarian helicopter.
Also, I heard that the the Hind in extremley well armored, but the tail is made out of material. Is this true? If so, why?

Is that an accident waiting to happen?
I mean, it's not wise firing a mortar shell when one of your helicopters is about to pass above you.

India has used and continues to use Hinds as part of it's UN operations. Not sure if the pic above is of an IAF Hind, though.

I havn't heard anything about that but maybe seeing everything is goen to us. :D
I still would prefer and want the Tiger Attack chopper though, maybe in a few years we'll get the Tiger. We just upgraded our chopper with new electronics so we can get a few more years out of them, but we'll have to buy new attack choppers eventually.

In soldier of fortune magazine a british SeaLion pilot was given a Mi-24D as part of russia's contribution to the Sierra Leone mission I think it was in 1995? Anyway he hunted down rebels around a 150km ring with just one hind. And they succeded in pushing them out. Here's and exert from the article:
"I pulled it out at 250m over a ridge line heading straight for the village at about 200km/h, when over top I circled about three times and when I was just about to leave started taking HMG fire from behind luckily for me marthas thick "hind" armor prevented any rounds from penetrating, I circled back an found the guy firing from a burnt out hut and emptied about 90 rounds from the 30mm cannon into him and the surrounding area, I turned left and firid about 50 57mm rockets into several huts setting them on fire and then procceded to chase about 15 rebels to a nearby creek where they attempted to cross but the wounded got stuck in an up-draft and I finished every last one of them of with my cannon. I procceded to another call of a rebel attack on......"
Pretty sweet huh? Man the hind is kinda old' but I wouldn't wanna be chased by one. :(

Have to laugh about the drawings of the chemical spraying Hinds.
the west saw photos of Hinds with large tanks under their wings and assumed they were chem weapon tanks. They later found they were fuel tanks.
There is a Chem warfare variant of the Hind but it has grabbing attachments on the wings where the ATGMs are normally fitted and it is for taking soil samples and testing, not deploying chem weapons.
Side Mounted 23mm cannons on the Hind F or P model
The side mounted cannon of the P model (ie Mi-24P is what NATO calls the Hind-F) is a 30mm cannon related to the twin barrel gun fitted to the Su-25. A later modification of the Hind has a twin 23mm gun in a nose mounted turret.

The government of Ivory Coast operated three mercenary crewed MI 24s during the conflict that started in september 2002.
They were flown by South Africans with ground support provided by Ukrainians and Bulgarians that were rumoured to be particularly un-efficient.
They mostly attacked undefended targets, dumps but also civilian targets like villages, causing many needless casualties and spreading terror. The French demanded the end of those raids and the departure of those helos.
They were also a few MI 8 in the government mercenary air wing.

A later modification of the Hind has a twin 23mm gun in a nose mounted turret.
What variant is that?
What variant is that?
Not sure about the NATO codename, but the Russian system is Mi-24P for the fixed twin 30mm cal weapons, Mi-24D for the AT-2 missiles and the 50 gatling in the nose turret, Mi-24V for the AT-6 and 12.7mm gatling in nose turret, Mi-24VP with AT-6 and twin 23mm cannon in the nose turret (with 470 rounds of ammo).
It has also been called Mi-24VM and VPN has been suggested as a night version with the allweather addons from the Mi-28N. The Mi-24VM has many parts from the Mi-28 like new rotors and shorter stub wings etc.
Very early on they developed a twin 23mm turret but had problems with it jamming and overheating. It has been improved and fixed now and is added to improve work sharing. (ie with fixed 30mm guns and four unguided rocket pods the pilot controlled the gun and the rocket pods while the "gunner" launched the guided missiles and navigated and spotted targets. With a turning turret the gunner can control the guns and missiles while the pilot fires the unguided rockets.
here is a pic of a Mi-24VM:
