The Fuerzas Especiales (Special Forces), also known as FES (the initials of their motto), is special operations unit of the Mexican Navy oficially established in late 2001. Its motto is "Fuerza, Espíritu, Sabiduría".

Its origin was in the Marine Airborne Batallion back in the early 1990s, by that time the group had no more than 6 members.

They received training from veteran marine and naval officers that have taken special forces courses around the world. Their mission is to carry out amphibious special operations in order to protect the nation's maritime interests. The group has 460 members divided in two groups of 230 members for each Naval Force (Pacific and Gulf). The special forces course lasts 53 weeks. These forces are capable of carrying out non-conventional warfare in the air, sea and land, by utilizing all means of infiltration available to develop the most variable operational incursions with the use of military diving techniques, parachuting, vertical descent, urban combat, sniping and use of explosives. They are units organized, trained and equipped to operate independently in maritime, lake, riparian or terrestrial scenarios in order to:

* Recover taken installations or personnel whose lives are in danger or have been captured by the enemy.
* Rescue hostages or capture material in oil platforms, urban areas, ships, airplanes or ground vehicles.

The FES uses sophisticated weaponry and equipment that is not common in conventional military forces.

To fulfill their mission and practise their attributes they receive specialized training in the following areas:

* Special operations
* Reconnaissance
* Search and rescue
* Surface warfare
* Anti-aircraft warfare
* Amphibious warfare
* Mine warfare
* Submarine and counter-submarine warfare
* Military intelligence
* General naval forces support
* Air and ground logistics

i have one last question: WHY?

Knowing the fact that they are a pecial operations unit many of their ops are not known by the people. But it's known the veterans of this group fought the guerrilla in Chiapas. They have also intercepted many big shipments of drugs going through Mexican territorial waters. The FES have participated in international events such as the UNITAS militay exercises, they were also embedded with the mexican navy's convoy to Indonesia and New Orleans by providing security to the personnel. Unlike the army's SF units, the FES are the only Mexican SF unit that have being in foreign country as an ''operational'' unit. Their recent deployment was in the recent visit of president Bush in Cancun by setting up a perimeter where Bush was staying.

And respondign to your last question, I don't understand what you mean by WHY?

They are the only Spec ops unit of the navy. The group that guards the oil platforms is the ASIES. And no they don't use g36s.
