Dont have any pics, but from what i know its usually conducted at a table, with three chairs, one for the prisoner, one for the interrogator, and one for the translator.

The interrogator and prisoner sit opposit of the table facing each other, the translator sits behind the prisoner facing the interrogator.

sand bags on heads are optional, and im not sure about shackles.

go read 'the interrogators'

gives you insight, no pics though.

Interrogators themselves normally speak the language. They are held to a higher graduating standard than the linguist analysts and voice intercept operators.

I have personal pics of DLI, but they will be quite old. I just did a google image search and found some nice ones. try here:

What struck me about DLI was how nice the town was and how crappy the post was. Most of the buildings are circa 1940's-50's with a ramshackle remodeling job every few years or so. I left there in very early 2004 and they were supposedly going to begin an expansion process for new an improved buildings to prepare for an influx of students in the hi-priority languages.

sh*t, I was there in 90-91, and I thought the buildings were quite nice, at least back then. Fort Ord on the other hand, seemed run down. I definitely liked the "quaint" look and feel of DLI and NPG. Still a totally nice area, and I had a freakin' blast at the school! Except for all of the studying and stress, of course, heh heh.

there was a special on the history channel or maybe the military channel and during it they showed an interrogation cell at what im assuming was guantanamo bay. it is triangular in shape, with the prisoner sitting with his/her back to the narrowest part to give them a sense of being cornered. two interrogators sit opposite the prisoner who is also shackled to the floor

probably doesnt help much but i found it interesting

Jedburgh posted this thread (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=66129) a while back about some of the new training going on at DLI.

Here's the video he linked there: Opertion Vigilant Order (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5554240351285097652&q=%22Operation+Vigilent+Order%22+playable%3Atrue)

I was a 97E (Interrogator/Linguist as it was known then) from 1985 to 1993 in the USAR. I loved every minute I spent at DLI. I found the Presidio very nice and certainly not "run down" at all. This was even before they started building the barracks at the top of the hill. It's a great place to spend a year (or more).

You want to talk about a crappy post - you should spend some time at Fort Huachuca, AZ. DLI is like Club Med in comparison (or it was in '86).

I have some great pics of the place (and Huachuca) from back then, but no scanner to get them posted up here. I posted a story (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=79894) in the "Personal REMF Stories" thread about DLI. ;)

I don't know if you were referencing what I wrote, but by "run down" I said I felt Fort Ord was that way; even though Ord probably had the best location of all Posts in the Army! Yeah, I know how bad Huachuca is...been there too!

Nah, DH - I was referencing el borracho's comment about Monterey being nice, but the Presidio being "crappy". Your post is pretty much how I remember it. I didn't think Fort Ord was too bad either though, I thought it was pretty nice. Of course, I went through basic at Ft Knox and was housed in the same open bay type barracks that my dad was housed in when he went to basic there in 1949. So, anything was an improvement over that. :)

I really need to take a trip out there sometime. I haven't been to Monterey since I left DLI. On the other hand, I have zero desire to go back to Sierra Vista. :p

Well, the main buildings on the campus were kept in decent shape. The "up-the-hill" dorms are showing their age, but are still liveable. And to agree with Deadhorse, Ft. Ord is quite dilapidated. Much of the housing is condemned and a lot of people outright refused to live there, preferring to take their chances by living in the Monterey area and paying the exhorbitant rent costs. Some even paid out of pocket because the BAS wouldn't cover all of it.

Around the time I left, the Ft. Ord housing had just been privatized thereby losing the benefits of "military provided housing." That was the last straw for a lot of people I knew, they packed up and rented an apartment in town.

There's a "campus" now, lol?? When I was there, I was in C Co, (the first barracks on the left as you come in the gate) and went to our classrooms next to the Parade/PT field. Ours was the one next to the "cantine/snack bar".

It's a shame Ord has fallen apart. The whole area, in general, was really nice. Well, except for maybe....Seaside! rofl

Sorry for the late reply. That's pretty damn cool, I graduated in '86. I remember Mr Velikoshapka :). My primary was Anna Pavlovna Belafskaya and our alt was Valeri Bochstien. He was a pretty neat guy. We went drinking with him one evening... that was a mistake.

Small world ^_^
