Hey gentlemen, I apologize in advance if this is the wrong thread. I read in my local newspaper that GunMart is selling SKS semi-auto 7.62x39mm rifles. I was wondering what the civilian equivilant to the 7.62x39 is. I know that the .308 is the same as the 7.62x59mm . My uncle has an SKS but its chambered in the .223 I believe(not 100% sure) The reason I'm asking this is because I'm wondering if it would be a large enough calibre for deer. Anyways if anyone has any info on this subject I would really appreciate a response!

7.63 x 39 IS what it says it is. In 308 there are a lot of different cartridges using a .308 bullet, 30-30, 30 carbine, 30 herret, 30-06, 300 savage, 300 rem ultra mag, 300 win mag etc
Generally there is a metric size for all rounds, 308 has two meaning, it is bullet diameter, and 308 Winchester cartridge also has a metric military name.
Generally a SKS is sufficient for small dear, Deer at close range, also bullet selection is important. Suggest, taking a hunters safety course and go from there.

I understand all of the .308, 30-30 cartridges, I just got confused with the 7.62x39. And i have taken my hunters safety course and I have my FAC(canada's firearms owners license). So if I were to buy ammunition for this SKS I would have to search for 7.62x39mm? There isn't an equivilant to it example 7.72x51mm=.308 WIN.
7.62x39 is how it will be designated when you buy it at any local vendor. I got a crapload of it sitting in my closet. Wolf, in my opinion, is the best 7.62x39 you can get.

Although the question was kind of already answered, the yes or no answer is... well... No.
Its a russian caliber (of course) so it doesnt fit into the same caliber naming paradigm as most western derived calibers.

Yeah, it's generally just referred to as 7.62x39

The fullest version I can think of would be
"7,62mm x 39 M43"
The latter standing for "Model 1943"

No such a thing, all SKS rifle are in 7.62x39mm and this caliber does not have any other name. There are a lot of Russian and Chinese 7.62x39mm ammo that are pretty much the same as military specs. When American ammo companies make 7.62x39mm they state the same on the box, Winchester calls it "metric" line of ammo, which also includes 7.62x54R.
