Check out backpacker.com from Backpacker magazine.
They have very thorough gear guides and analysis of all things camping/hiking/outdoors. Katydin is a good one, so is the other...I don't think you'll go wrong either way.

Only sure way to sterilize the H2O is to boil it though.

This is what you want, one of the best out there. I've used the Miniworks without any ill effects:

Get a KATADYN. Very high quality filter.

Either one is great. I use the MSR.

They're both V.Good.

I've used Katadyn for years - so that's what I'd go for. MSR are newer to the market.

Both very good. The thing that I prefer about the MSR is you can screw it directly on to many types of ‘wide mouth’ water bottles and the MSR bladder. I the past I have knocked or kicked over the bottle just as I had almost finished filling it and had to start all over again!!

Be Warry.

Use a sock full of moss gravel and Fire ash!

I can vouch for the msr miniworks. Dead simple, rock solid design. Very easy to strip down to clear the inevitable blockage. I considered a katadyn filter as the cartridges last much longer but I decided to go with the msr for the above reasons. MSR cartridges are readily available and are pretty cheap. If you're off on a very long trip and need to supply a group of people then perhaps the katadyn pocket filter is for you. The cheaper katadyn filters have a pretty poor flow rate and are not as robust. Remember neither kill viruses. Take some chlorine or iodine with you to do this. If you can, use the chlorine/iodine before filtering to improve the flavour. I use mcnett aqua mira, a bit expensive but I like it.

Best cheap method for solo, lightweight trips. Coffee filter papers and a bottle so you can eliminate particles then a few drops of chlorine or iodine to kill everything else. You can get rid of the taste of both by using a soluble vit c pill.
