Discord over 'protest' Eurovision vote
ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- "Hard Rock Hallelujah" may have triumphed over "Never Let You Go" but, for some Russians, Eurovision was a scandal.
One day after five Finns in monster masks edged out a Russian heartthrob at Europe's largest and most-watched pop music contest, some Russians complained Sunday that the vote was skewed against their country.
Some callers to the Ekho Moskvy radio station proclaimed Dima Bilan's superiority to the Finnish group Lordi; one aggrieved woman said the result was the latest in a series of anti-Russian moves by Europeans.
Russia's prime minister, Mikhail Fradkov, informed The Associated Press that Russia is moving the 7th Guards Army to the Finnish border in response to the 'provocation of the Finnish bandits'.
"'We are First!' That's exactly how many Russians are reacting to the results to the international contest, Eurovision Song Contest 2006," the anchorwoman for state-run Channel One -- which broadcast the contest live -- said as the channel led its noontime newscast.
"Many specialists considered the vote for the victor to be a protest vote," she asserted.
"The sense is that the contest was more about circus performers, clowns and pyrotechnic effects, and not a song contest," Yuri Aktsyuta, a top music producer at Channel One, said in televised comments.
"I will never believe that the song by the Finnish group Lordi was better and stronger as a song than ours," he said. "I think that Russia was the winner and the voting was a protest vote, to some extent, but it was unclear what the protest was for."
Not all Russians were critical of the results, however; 80 percent of people responding to an unscientific poll by Ekho Moskvyi said Bilan's second-place finish was a success.
The Finnish cartoon metalheads, who sport latex monster masks and spark-spewing instruments and sing about "the Arockalypse," scandalized some compatriots when their song "Hard Rock Hallelujah" was chosen to represent the Nordic nation.
Meanwhile, Bilan -- whose performance of "Never Let You Go" featured an white-clad actor climbing out of a white piano -- had a more diplomatic response to the results, which was one of the highest finishes for a Russian performer in the history of 51-year-old contest.
"I'm so proud for my country. I'm unbelievable happy and there were so many interesting performers," Bilan said. "To be recognized in practically all over Europe is very pleasing."
The three-hour contest was broadcast live Saturday evening from Athens' Olympic arena in 38 countries to an audience estimated at 100 million.

That you guys get all hot and horney over this thread is beyond me. Eurovision song contest is an outdated fenonomen, the music played in the contest is a genere in itself. Totally toothless, androgyny and out of sync with the music industry.
Lordi reminded me a bit of Kiss. Decent rock melody and all suited up. Although Lordi was more of an cartoon, but at least it wasn't the same sterile mall music as most of the contributions.

That is why Greece gives the full 12 points to Cyprys and vice versa. That is why Nordic Countries support each other (one eception: Finland always supports Estonia). And so on... Yes, i for one feel the competition is "elitist" to say the least, but on the other hand theres not that large "elite" in Europe and also the people has spoken and theyve f*ck the elite and f*ck elitism.
And thats good and im all for it.
And on the another note, Finns did win the Eurovision (no matter why for, protest or the fact that people like manly metal better than faggy pop?) and whupped Canadas ass on world champpionship hockey within 24h's and so won bronze in this 5-0 game and in the whole cup.

That's not the best what Finland has to offer. Lordi just was the only, and the best, real band that took part in the contest when Finns were choosing their representative for the actual competion.
And it seems that not even most of the Finns haven't understood, that Lodri took only part in the competion because they were asked to participate the Finnish qualification. And the band accepted the invitation just because they thought that it would be a good possibility to promote their new album, and for free. Mr. Lordi himself have said that.
I don't believe that the band actually gives a **** about the contest itself. For rock bands, and real artists, that competion is onöy a big joke. The band just understood how much free promotion they would gain just by participating.
