It was not DSU SIE in action, but DSU POSA Gent.
It happened on May 23rd, 2006.

More pictures from Belga Press Agency.

I loved the pic in Het Laatste Nieuws today where the POSA guys wore their nicknames on the back of their vest and helmet.Pretty cool.

Anyone know if the Kortrijk local police special unit TARES was involved?

Good site on structure of Belgian special police units. I don't know if all information is correct. What the relation between the federal DSU and those local "special" units. Antwerp has a POSA unit and the BBT. Ghent also has a POSA unit and OBT. I is not like Ghent is such a dangerous place it needs both a POSA unit and OBT, and Kortrijk... Maybe the mayor likes to have his own special unit or some local cops also want some part of the action?

Well, I guess every city has armed crime, and you cant expect the DSU-SIE to come from Brussels everytime someone flashes a gun. I guess POSA might be able to handle most of these cases, although i though they were really more of a support unit, which is why I'm surprised to learn that it was POSA that apprehended this gunman. But anyways, i think its only reasonable that every city (even Gent and Kortrijk) has a special unit to fight armed criminals. But for serious situations (eg, terrorism, hostage taking) the SIE is always ready.

And Bruges....:| Maybe they can be useful in some situations but where do they draw the line?

I have been trying to locate TARES members at the pictures and several TV footages, but it wasn't clear.

Even Bruges has their COBRA team.
Here you have a picture of a COBRA member.

Federal Police provides by law the special units for counterterrorism, banditism and observation and negotiation.
Actually DSU is their general name. Part of DSU is the best known SIE Intervention platoon, which is mostly named or seen in action.
Another part is the SIE Observation platoon, you also have the negotiators, the undercoverteam (UCT) and a technical team. These are all located at Brussels.
Then you have 4 POSA teams (Protection - Observation - Support - Arrest) at Ghent, Antwerp, Charleroi and Liège.
They all have Arrest Sections and Observation Sections and a technical section.
They normally operate within 2 provinces, but generally work over whole Belgium.
Press always speak about SIE, because since the new grey overalls and since they wear the same arm patch (only different breast patch which you can't see under their equipment), it is difficult to see the difference.

Local Police often has their own units, because it takes some time to deploy DSU teams. Also because there is sometimes too much work for DSU only.
So you find teams from the Local Police at Bruges (Cobra), Ghent (former OBT, starting with new team on July 1st), Antwerp (BBT), Kortrijk (TARES), Lier (TABO), Liège (PAB), Namur (GIS), Boraine (Groupe Delta), HAZODI Hasselt-Zonhoven-Diepenbeek (BOA) ...

I hope this makes it a bit more clear.
