The russian designers of Suchoj bureau determineted that T-10/Flanker A/RAM-K had probably same abilities as F-14 and F-15 (the first fly of T-10 was in 1977) so they remade this to well-known Su-27 today look/Flanker B with better abilities (the first fly of Su-27 was in 1981)

I'm not sure the Flanker is 'better' than the F-15 even today, but all due respect to the russian designers who came up with a world-class fighter, with probably a fraction of the development budget available to western aircraft designers. A terrific aircraft - beautiful as well!

I remember the first time I saw a photo of the T-10 in the late 70’s. It was a grainy black & white overhead picture but detailed enough that I knew they had a sweet plane on the way. I kept thinking the Tomcat was going to have a decent competitor one day.
SU-27 series very nice machines indeed.
I found it! T-10 Ram-K
Here's the old recon shot I saw so long ago
http://www.suchoj.com/ab1953/T-10/images/RAM-K_31.jpg
It was later published in one of the 80's Reagan era "Soviet Military Power" handouts that made the rounds back then to support the arms buildup. The angle of the shot distorts the image a bit. To me, it looked a lot like a 14 with the wings extended.
Here's the site I found the picture at.

I remember the first time i saw the picture of a Flanker, if memory serves me right, it was a norwegian air force P-3 Orion crew, who was the first to photograph it, in 1987 or so. But it is a long time ago, so i might well be wrong here. But i do remember how exciting it was to finally see pics of it.

after the photos taking on 13th September 1987, 10:56 AM Su-27 and Orion collided, Su-27 hit the Orion right propeller by left rudder or Orion hit Su-27 rudder:-)))....

woot Indeed! I remember they were in the newspaper 'aftenposten' - we got the paper in Lebanon too, and i studied them for ages. The Flanker was a real boogeyman back then, interest was huge. Nice find buddy!
