I wish I had this guy as my physics teacher.

Hells yeah! All we did in our physic's class was put a Grover doll on a bungee cord.

How is that irresponsible, or wreckless? The people saying that are the ones who view rifles as if they were evil inherently.

Experiments like that are what bring physics problems to reality and make them easier to understand. And they make the class interesting, so students pay more attention and get more out of it.

Kiss my ass if you have some personal issue with guns, its as safe as any other experiment that would take place in a physics class and its 10x as effective.

****, why don't they bitch about some of the harsh chemicals they deal with in a chemistry class. All a kid would have to do is chug it and its game over...

I'd give all thumbs up for the teacher for creativity and passion. Perhaps that dimwit anonymous parent would rather have two lesbians playing Hide the Sausage to demonstrate velocity?

Just to make a point, I'd say political correctness is a far greater danger to the educational system than a veteran with a low-vel carbine, because political correctness destroys learning by imposing unrealistic and untestable conditions in the school environment.

and it was an awesome lab=the ballastic pendulum experiment.

In all fairness, if you say the word rifle and classroom in the same sentence, most parents' first reaction would be somewhere along the lines of fear. You can't call anyone stupid or pansy because of that, especially if they feel like they don't have enough information.

With that said, the experiment sounds like something that would actually get students to engage, which is good and something that I would prefer than the high school physics class I had to endure.

In my High School, half the Juniors and Seniors had shotguns and/or hunting rifles in the gun racks of our pickups. You don't even want to know what all could be found in the trunks and tool boxes.

Non issue.

"Were there not other ways of illustrating whatever physical principles he was trying to demonstrate?" Feinberg asked. "What's the message we are giving bringing a loaded gun into a public setting and firing it off. It's a terrible model to project on students."

There are several messages, you moron:
1) A gun is a tool, no more, no less. Yes, a dangerous tool, but still just a tool. There are MANY dangerous tools that people manage to interact with responsibly and safely every day, despite this particular tool causing you to wet your pants (most likely due to the sand in your vagina).
2) In a public setting, a gun being fired can be done responsibly and safely and with a positive purpose. In this case, it's helping kids learn about physics AND actually doing it in a way they enjoy that might get them interested enough to pursue. In the case of a police officer or legally armed civilian shooting a criminal in public legally, it's a person defending themselves or someone else. Legally.
3) It counters the fear based and false message of people like you that guns are only used in irresponsible/dangerous ways and "person with gun" equals "criminal".

Hopefully they can get the right permission to make sure this is legal and he can continue. Glad to hear the principal approves, makes it a little less likely he'll be treated as "that crazy gun totin teacher who might slaughter my poor babies OMG gunz R 3v1L waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah i have sand in my vagina!!!"

And on a related note: in science class in 8th grade, my teacher brought in what I believe was a CAR-15 (didn't know enough about guns then to be sure, but it was 1982-83 and was definitely a shorty AR type rifle). He fired several blanks thru it semi auto and full auto, and let anyone who wanted to come up and hold it while he showed you how to aim (at a wall). He then discussed a bit about how a machine gun works in a way that was really a pre high school introduction to physics and mechanical engineering and could have easily helped inspire a kid to study such things. Somehow, not a single kid in the class got shot, stole the gun to rob a bank or shoot up the school, or sh1t their pants and was emotionally scarred by this horrid incident. Kids thought it was cool (the normal guys and cool chicks) or boring (morons, faigs, and b1tches). Thats all.

I remember in my physics class, our sadistic teacher made out how long it would take for a person who jumped off the WTC to reach the ground. think it was summit crazy like 11 secs.......

Spent some time reading up on the guy...

A pretty smart guy with a lot of experience and dedication. You know me, if I was a kid in his class, he would not only have my attention, but my respect. This is one of those rare teachers that does what he does to help kids learn and enjoys doing it. I would hate to see something happen to him because he was doing something that actually made learning interesting.

I bet if he had been doing this in Kansas,

Here is his website:

Damn, I swear, I honestly do not know who is more at fault in destroying this nation's High School education...

No Child Left Behind or lefty MF'ers.

to an extent . there really was no threat of anything happening. prior to the lab the gun was locked in its case unloaded. it sure as hell beats reading **** from the textbook.

(last night was prom at my school, he was one of the shaperones, I was talking to him how his news were everywhere-he found it pretty amusing.
)

mr lapp is a pretty cool guy overall. although he sometimes preaches libertarian propoganda to us.
