Good tank that BMP is. In a way I wish the Army would have just bought a pot load of BMP's and modernized them to their specs instead of buying the Stryker.
I bet you dont wish they bought the BMP instead of the Bradley thought do you now????? The Bradleys proved EXTREMELY effective in Gulf War 2. So effective that some in the army now argue to further develope the Bradley instead of moving some units to the Stryker. Keep in mind that the Stryker is only for select units and is not intended to become the next Infantry Fighting Vehicle.....
To compare the Stryker to the BMP is unfair. Compaire the Stryker to the BRDM and then which would you wish for man??? eh??
Compaire the BMP to the Bradley is more fair as they are in the same class. Which would you rather have then eh???
Only advantage the BMP has it that some airborne variants are amphibiose capable. But thats not much to cheer about when a Bradley tears you a new one with its chain gun.........

To be truthful, a Brad wouldn't like getting hit by the BMP-2's 30mm either... Sensors, sights and crew ergonomics is way better in the Brad though, so it has an advantage in a fight through that. And the Brad isn't as much of a deathtrap that a BMP is if it strikes a mine...
Both the BMP and the Brad suck mule in snow though, to narrow tracks on the BMP, and to short tracks on the Brad gives poor flotation. The engine on the Brad is somewhat underpowered too. :)
I like BMPs and all, but the placement of the fuel tanks makes me think I wouldn't want to get anywhere near one in a fight.
Also, as long as we're getting technical, you would want to compare the Striker to the BTR family. In any event, comparisons are facile as the two vehicles were designed by two militaries with very different doctrine. That said, I love the BTR, though.

Hey, Im a Cav Scout in training so dont think Im resentful of having Brads. I love them to death. The reason why I copare the BMP to the Stryker is because the Army wanted a light and fast vehicle capable of carrying troops to get to places before the main forces arrived to engage the enemy. BMP's are a truely awesome vehicles, go ask a British amour commander cause he'll tell ya the same thing.

Those look like some happy homeboys on those BMP's. I really would like travelling to that sort of a place, meeting all them sorts of folks, and hopefully not contracting aides just by looking at a hippo or something  .
Good shots!

The reason the Bradley went out of favour is because of its weight and cost meant that to fight with Bradleys and M1A2s the US needs at least 6 months and lots of transport to get to the battle area. the only plus for using vehicles like Stryker is to get there in Herc sized aircraft... that was the theory anyway (IMHO a herc is too slow and was only intended as a tactical transport, not a strategic one anyway). A BMP-2 is very comparable in weight to a Stryker, and the only real Russian equivelent is not the BRDM, which is of course a scout car, but the BTR-80/-90 series.

The BMP-3 has long range HE firepower from its 100mm gun, 5km ATGM that can be fired on the move, a more powerful main cannon, and is cheaper and full amphibious... as all BMPs and BTRs are.

I have heard good things from South African soldiers that used Angolan BMP-2s too. They greatly preferred them to their Ratals, though the Ratals had some very good points too. (ie large capacity water storage and ergonomics).
BTW the Americans NEVER copy anyone, but just after the BMP-2 was seen for the first time the prototype Bradley suddenly appeared with a two man turret. The first model had a single man turret like the BMP-1 with the vehicle commander in the hull behind the driver....
