This is a quesion to all of those who served o serve.
How often did you clean your rifle? Not just the pipe but all the stuff inside. The times when you where shooting with it of course, like shooting weeks and training.

I used a swedish AK5 http://world.guns.ru/assault/as35-e.htm a copy of a belgian fn-fnc
We used to cleaned once a weak. When we only were firing blanks twice.
thats of course besides doing the pipe everyday before shooting.

This can be interesting concerning different rifles.
I know it can be hard to accurately measure the difference btw different guns here because we mabe didn shoot the same amount. But it can still beinteresting

Now i use an AK4 swedish copy of HK-G3 but I havent used it for longer than e weekend at one time so I dont know really. I didnt need to do anything else than the pipe.

I clean my 'weapon' daily, sometimes twice if I'm expecting company that evening.

what cind of weapon do you use?
Do it risk to jam otherwise

By the way, in sweden we dont have our rifles in our rooms, so we cant clean then whenever we want. Dunno how it is in peacekeeping missions and so on.

Careful or you'll have an accidental/negligent discharge

As a fellow Swede I feel sorry for the lad. You guys keep on nudging and winking while I answer his intended question. ;)

Don't know what unit you served with in Sweden, but we had two types of weapon's maintenance forms (otherwise known as "care/cleaning", or in Swedish - vård): daily care/cleaning (daglig vård) and special care/cleaning (särskild vård.)

Shouldn't be too hard to figure out when the daily care/cleaning was done. Special care/cleaning was done routinely on Fridays, but could also be ordered at other times (an example would be after having played in the coastal waters where the rifles could attract rust from the salt water etc.)

The main difference between the two is that the daily care/cleaning is not inspected by the NCO's or CO's and the rifle is quickly lubed afterwards, (that's right - snicker away fellas!) while the special care/cleaning warrants it's own special inspection (can you tell the Swedish military is "special"? ) where each part of the rifle is inspected prior to being lubed and re-assembled.

Of course - depending on your activites you might end up cleaning your rifle several times a day to maybe not taking it apart for a week or two.

Thanks for the post.

pansar

Things is that nobody did daily care/cleaning (daglig vård) and the rifles still worked perfectly whe only did the friday special cleaning. Mostly atleast.

Our weapons rarely got dirty because of "natural" reasons such as dust, mud and so on.

But I guess that the rifle in a long term didnt feel good about us not doing the "daily" care.

pansarNot as Mechanized Infantry (pansarskytte) then?

Things is that nobody did daily care/cleaning (daglig vård) and the rifles still worked perfectly whe only did the friday special cleaning. Mostly atleast. The thing about cleaning the AK5 is that it really doesn't need to be cared for that bad - it's a pretty reliable design (as an example the gas piston system of the FNC/AK5 is more reliable than the gas system of the M16.) It's just that CO's can't stand looking at a dirty weapon (even if the dirt is just on the outside) plus it gives the troops something to do instead of just milling around aimlessly when no other duties are assigned.

But I guess that the rifle in a long term didnt feel good about us not doing the "daily" care.Actually I'd say the opposite - if anything what really wore out our AK5's was the constant cleaning - we cleaned our rifles more than we shot them.
Of course, when I went in we didn't have BreakFree CLP yet - we were stuck using cosmoline for cleaning. :cantbeli: But towards the end we got better equipment (CLP, better brushes for the gas tube, etc etc.)

When I was in Afg. I always carried a paint brush in my kit and would sweep out the exposed parts of my weapon at every opportunity. Any excessive oil would just collect dust so we only oiled the truly essential parts.
As far as a complete break-down and cleaning. Whenever you can bud! Especially, like someone else said, if your expecting company. Learn how to do it well and you can do it while you watch TV or talk about upcoming Ops. It should be second nature. As far as SPORTS gos, if the f..kin’ thing don’t go off, that’s why I kept my M9 clean and in a speed holster. ;-)
