Well, this just in on the newswire. After only 3 years lit, Britains Eternal flame to world peace has been shut off over a dispute around who wil pay the bills.

In addition, and what makes this article one of the funniest things I have ever read about the British, the Birmingham Council argued that the eternal flame should be snuffed because it "contributes to the problem of global warming".

I don't see anything wrong with it, in my opinion if your wasting 12000 pounds of council money on something burning gas year in year out for no real practical reason, then it would be pretty stupid to keep it.

Don't people occaisounally walk by? Then it is just for them to change the candle when it is almost done. Work with me here. Not against me.

That's funny.

I too support an enviro-friendly & entirely voluntarily funded quasi-eternal non-combustible memorial beacon.

No open flames, as these contribute to global warming, are a fire hazard, and evoke images of destruction/power/vitality, which must be avoided so as not to offend the weak.

No dolphins must be harmed in the faux-flaming process. Ensure all contractors are informed & file compliance forms on recycled paper & examine all build sheets for dolphin parts or excreta.

Any light generated must coincide with normal daylight hours so as to not interfere with any insect or avian migratory patterns. Also, avoid confusing raccoons or postmen.

All material used in construction must be formed in a non-stratified homogeneous post-consumer waste amalgam who's composition must be certified to be free of any newspaper or magazine articles promoting smoking, eating meat, or language potentially hostile towards certified protected groups.

Man, I hate the General Discussion section, but I laughed out loud at this.

The main problem is the funding disagreement - the council doesnt want to pay 12000 pounds a year on a glorified candle.

I want to know how they're arriving at a figure of 12,000 pounds (that's around $24,000 US). That seems a bit steep. Are they caluclating how much they could get if the space was leased to Starbucks & calculating lost revenue? For that kind of money, they could hire some homeless guy to stand there with a burning newspaper.

Seems the kind of price you would arrive at if you were burning gas day in day out for 365 days a year. They should have just lit it for the Millenium celebrations and then left it at that.

Did some research - seems the average monthly gas bill in Britain is $377. Compare that to January in Colorado at $147 (after a doubling of gas prices there). Britian is paying a lot for gas! Is the gas "royal" in any way?

Maybe the non-burning fixture should be renamed the "math is power" memorial (since apparently the city council couldn't figure out costs in advance). Or maybe the "a former council member's brother worked for the gas company" memorial.

Local councils make mistakes all the time, its not as if us British don't have our fair share of plonkers.

What is he going on about?

"In a world where we are increasingly aware of greenhouse gases, we need to consider whether burning 12,000 pounds of gas every year is a responsible attitude to the environment. If it was a fudge-packing machine I certainly would support the continued expense." Ian Ward, head of the council's leisure department, was quoted as saying.

FOr everybody in North America who obviously don"t know as much about Europe as they think.

Current price for the cheapeast lowest grade gasoline 1.12 Euros for one liter

That's $ 5.20 US per GALLON!

BlackRain:

he basically means that they are burning alot of fuel but there isnt any output, i.e in the case of a fudge packing machine the output would be, erm, packed fudge :D.

I think it was a joke because here in the USA "packing-fudge" means something different.
