In those days, Iran was the superpower of the region. Their armed forces had the best equipment, including F-14, British Chieftain tanks (actually the British Chieftain was developed AFTER the design originally requested by the Iranians) and so on. The purges after Jomeini's revolution left them in shambles, but they managed to gain ground after being invaded by the Iraqis.

didn't they also have a huge F-16 order, and some AWACS which were never delivered?

Correct on the AWACS, I am not sure about the F-16. They also had military hovercrafts. The works. Their airborne brigade was equiped with UZIs and wore British DPM uniforms. I have a pic of them in parade, and those dudes look like they mean business.

What? is that english?I am sorry to say this, but sometimes I feel uncomfortable and sad when confronted with the blatant ignorance of some people in recent history. It is one thing not to know who was, say, Mad Mitch or where is Crater, but to not know who was the Sha is somewhat worrying.

And couple of Kidd DDGs, which were very capable vessels based on Spruance DDG. They never made to the Iran becase the Ayatollahs cancelled the order, so US Navy had few new destroyers for free (Iran paid for them).

This should give everyone pause when considering the results of opinion polls here in the US.

Exactly, all four of them through FMA programme. Bad we didn't get any of those because Kidds are a powerful DDG vessel, combining AA Systems of Virinia CGNs, and ASuW capabilities of Spruances. We got two O.H Perry Class FFGs instead.

Btw, the hull of Spruance/Kidd was a basis for all Ticonderoga Class AAW CGs. Regards

Which is interesting considering the fact, internet is the biggest knowledge database you can imagine. But I think you just need to know how to use it.

Not sure about the Cheiftan, but the Challenger 1 was designed as a result of an order from Iran for a Cheiftan replacement. The order fell through with the islamic revolution and the 'Shir 1' was never delivered to Iran. It was adopted as Challenger 1 by the British Army after the MBT-70 british-german collaboration was axed.

By the way just prior to the revolution Iran had ordered 160 F-16's with an option of 140 more. Fİrst some F-16's were produced and technical documents with some spare parts already delivered. After revolution order was cancelled and those produced aircraft were sold -ironically- to Israel. These very first aircraft were used in Osiraq Raid in June 1981. Spare parts and technical documents which were delivered to Iran were later sold to Pakistan.

Iran had also plans to acquire a large fleet of F-18's, two aircraft carriers (like Invincible) and many more stuff before revolution.

In college, I had a friend who flew Gazelles for the Iraqi Army in the war against Iran. He's now a US citizen.

Then below video clip is for your friend !

Indeed Iraqi' Army Aviation did use the SA342 Gazelle Helicopters in both Utility and ATGM configuration.

However SA342 Gazelle Helicopters were very vulnerable to any kind enemy fire.
Many half destroyed forced to land wrecks were captured from crews who had to make emergency landing.

Iranian Army Aviation AH-1J/T Cobra pilots would generally go Hunt these SA342 Gazelle Helicopters whenever they encountered them.

We know of about quite a few such Helicopters vs. Helicopters battles in which quite a few SA342 Gazelle Helicopters were shot down by both TOW ATGM and 20mm Cannon of Cobra Helicopters.

Hence the arrival of Mil-24 and armed PC-7 to try and protect the Iraqi Hel flyers !

Thanks, F-14! By the way, my Iraqi friend told me of an instance when a fellow Iraqi helicopter pilot, in an Mi-24HIND, actually SHOT DOWN an Iranian F-4 Phantom. According to my friend, the Iraqi's achievement was 80% luck and 10% carelessness on the part of the Iranian pilot, but nonetheless, the incident made the Iraqi a local celebrity. Has anyone else ever heard of this incident?
My friend's Gazelle was armed with French HOT missles, and according to what I remember from our conversations, his missions were mainly anti-tank.

Hi

Regarding the Iraqi claim for shooting down of Iranian F-4 Phantom with one of their Hind Helicopters why not check out below
URL: http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_214.shtml (http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_214.shtml)
In particular go down to section with heading "Mi-25 vs. F-4"

One of above authors should be somewhere on this Forum, I leave any clarification on above to him.
