Only ten days ago, early in the morning, mostly tucked in, they hugged their pillows while falling to sleep. Most of them used to wake up around noon to the smell of mother's fritters coming from the kitchen. And now, at the crack of dawn around 7.00 a.m., they are lying in the middle of the field on tent canvas, holding tight their automatic rifles. They have already shaved themselves, washed themselves with cold water, made their beds and tided their dormitory, had breakfast and morning callisthenics...
The March recruits are experiencing their first days in the army throughout our country. Last week, we visited an Air Defence unit in the military barracks in Jakovo and gave them a boost to survive those first days more easily. We found around thirty freshmen, future gunners, practising ****e position for their first rifle shooting. One's helmet is falling off, the other's hands are shaking, and another one's belt is hanging loose... When the time comes for them to take the solemn oath, it will all be in its right place - their officers are saying.
"First three days were like on a merry-go-round. Orders coming all the time: take this, bring this, pack, arrange, hurry up, down, up, down, up"... - soldiers describe their first encounters with a new way of life. The worst is to get used to early waking up, making the bed, putting the locker in the best order... Instead of going out and having fun, they drop in at the canteen, in which they are allowed to stay ten minutes at the most, to buy some juice, candy or food, before they take the oath. Those more clever can even have time to drink a bear. "I have blisters from practising the marching steps", says soldier Nenad Vojinovic, making a frown. "This oath will come to pass, and we will all go home for the first time and our girlfriends will heal our wounds".
