View Full Version : Thinking of getting a scooter

I'm thinking of getting a scooter. A car is out of my price range, and I heard that scooter is cheap to run etc. So do any of you drive a scooter?

. Any advice on where to start?
. How much do lessons cost?
. What type of scooter should I look for?
. I heard they have poor security and can be robbed easily, true?

Any more tips would be great thanks.

I had a 50cc scooter before i had a car. It is really nice if you live in a city. If you're living in a rural area at least get a more powerful ride (125cc+). Sometimes i miss it. You can drive in town and don't need to care for a parking lot, you get through traffic jams etc. One advice, get a bit more then a jet helmet. You will need it. Once i really packed me on the asphalt and i was lucky that i didn't hit it with my unprotected face. It's not really safe. You'll loose against a car, but so do you when riding a bicycle.

Scooters are crap. Go buy a cheap car instead. I cant imagine it would be a whole lot more expensive.

Get a cross moped instead.

Start by looking for a decent second hand moped at around £400-600, make sure the engine is sound and that all the documents come with it, take it around afew quiet areas and familarise with steering at high and low speeds etc, learn the rules of the road and what signs mean etc.

You dont need lessons at all, CBT is very simple and costs around £70-£100ish, it starts with afew simple questions about your ped such as;

"wheres the oil go?"
"how do you safetly put it on a stand etc"

Then you will be taken around a area [mine was a empty playground] and must manouver around cones etc at low speeds and do afew moves, simple.
Once the Instructor is happy with your progress you will be taken out onto the road and will lead the way whilst being given drections to via intercom in your helmit, remember the roads and dont panic, simple.

Hopefully after a while you will be pulled over and given your pass certificate, viola very easy.

Mopeds are great fun when you gain confidence on them, i had mine for around 2years, nevercame off it and could make a 30min car journey through town in 10. Alot of fun when your dodging and weaving through heavy traffic. but now im driving I still miss it:)

But yeah hopefully that answred afew questions.

I had me a peugout speedfight, selling it now but it only ever gave out in cold mornings when I didnt let it warm up, simple twist and go no messing, only 50cc but clocked up around 15,000miles on it now [not me personally because it was second hand when I brought it!]

What do fat chicks and scooters have in common?

Rather get a dirtbike. A 125 cc KTM or some asian brand if you don't have the money for a KTM.

Look at this baby:

125cc Dirt Bike (4-stroke) for 900 dollars.

1. You look more mature on a crossmotor then on a scooter.
2. It's a lot faster.
3. Chicks dig a dirtbike more then a scooter.
4. It uses just as much gasoline as a scooter.
5. Taxes and insurance cost just as much as for a scooter.

But if you really want to be badass, get a QUAD!!!

I own a aprilia 50cc scooter, which I use for driving to school etc. I'm a bit slower on the roads outside the town I live, but in town there's nothing faster.

Personally, I would go for the KTM EXC 125ccm, preferably the Sixdays version that has 40hp :D and Supermotard tires. The best urban tackler there is ;)

Fe Fi, security was never really a problem, my bike had a built in steering lock [most do!] but also it had a built in wheel lock that would retract out under the seat and lock around the back wheel.

If you have a storage place like a back garden etc its ideal, if your bike doesnt have built in lock definately invest in buying a solid chain for it.

Heres some solid moped advice.

I have driven + owned evertype of sporty moped there is.

the gilera runner 50cc is a superior machine.
Top speed 50mph
good brakes
cheap parts.
run forever
have had mine since 2000. i rally it and its still going.

GET LESSONS:
My back is ****ed from a crash.
As a reservist it is hard for me to do long exercises with loads.

Always remember your Life saver(look over your shoulder)

Dont buy any modern 125 bikes as they dont make engines like they used to.Well so says me dad(35 years as a mechainic).

thats my worth.

I was looking at scooters a few weeks back. About the only one available in the US that didn't make the rider look like a total poof is the Honda Ruckus. Too bad it's only 50cc - probably better suited to my kids than to me. But on the plus side, it's pretty damn cheap, which means I could destroy it by riding it like an idiot, and still not feel to bad about it.

vespas are really cool but too trendy which makes the price go up, consider a honda, they never break down , specially honda cub 90, they are ugly but the engine runs like a swiss watch and the big wheels really absorbs the bumps on the road.

why, they are not cool? or just not legal? it is sure used a lot for deliveries but i always go for reliability over looks and the old cub series is it. i would rather ride that than cheap kimcos and yamaha jazz we have over here, also over here the cub is considered a man's scooter wereas all teh 50cc are strictly for the girls, dont know why but its true that most scooter riders here are girls and are always on 50cc

Maybe a second-hand Yamaha Slider.

It's really light (only 70 kilo), looks modern because it's a scooter. It has bump-kussens (Don't know how to explain) on it's sides. When you crash you won't **** up your frame. It's a really sturdy scooter.

See those black things on the sides ? Those are the kussens.

get yourself a 125 dirtbike with slicks (supermotard), tons more fun than a scooter and in my oppinion safer. I have a husky 125 (husqvarna), use it almost everyday and its faster than a scooter and is great if you want to head out of town on country roads. (you can go on the highway, but its no fun, to much wind and not enough power though you "can" go into the 140+kmh range with this thing). get a KTM second hand, I hear good stuff on them and I havent had problems with my Husky either except ppl stealing it, but that got solved with a lock on the brakeing disk.

thats a joke right? well, lets recommend a pocket bike next.

I already think a 125 2-stroke is underpowered, its good to start with though and a the slick-wheeled dirtbikes are plenty manueverable.

i think what you are refering to as "kussens"are also know as "rubber bumpers". looks like a great idea specially if some (unt tips your scooter when its parked . i personally dont like small weel scooters though, they look cool but its just so easy to hit a bump and tip over, ofcourse if you have proper roads in your country and proper or no speed bumps , that is not a problem.

they are pretty good fun too.
mines a 2000 and its been going strong since i got it about 9 months ago, only needed to replace the chain and sprockets, and the rear tyre which i replaced today.
they dont devalue much either i think i could sell mine for the same amount i bought it for because theres a market for them, and no one wants to shell out £2,500 for a new one.
and yeah i wouldnt be caught dead on a moped.

oh, didnt take the law into perspective, sorry, in that case the aprilla RS50(125) are pretty sweet considering. I was thinking about getting a RS125 or a Mito when I started looking for a bike, but I stumbled on my husky and found that I prefered the acceleration and cornering of the husky to the RS or Mito frame, its a different animal. I figured that I would eventually get myself a supersport when I was done with the 125 and then just remod the husky to go offroad by switching the tires and suspension, so it would still have use and I wouldnt have to sell it. I also thought that having a supersport chassis would need a faster engine.
ok, I also got a pretty sweet deal on it since I bought it off a freind and it only had 1800km on it.
Funny on how once you ride a bike you cant be bothered anymore to drive a scooter... goes to show.

The RS50's are a joke....

The RS125s are quite fun....especially the new ones......but still best for track use..rather than road.

The RS250 is no longer made(and unavailable stateside being a 2 stroker), but could do 140mph.

Wait until you see what Aprilia does with the new small twin they've got :)

For a scooter...I'd recommend an Aprilia Scarabeo....or a Scarabeo clone.....the bigger the diamtere of the wheels, the more comfortable and fun the ride and handling will be.

I have the chance to drive just about every bike made...sometimes I ride scooters just cause they're fun :)

I'd stay away from the cheap Chinese cr@p unless you buy it fully knowing it will not only be worthless, but completely falling apart useless at the end of summer.
