SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/states/california/peninsula/8230047.htm) - A former Marine One helicopter is now a Ronald Reagan Presidential Library museum piece.

A green Sikorsky VH-3A that once ferried Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford during their White House years floated to a landing Friday on the library's replica of the South Lawn. It recently completed a cross-country flight from Norfolk, Va.

One of Reagan's most memorable moments aboard a presidential helicopter came in 1989 when he left the White House for the last time and had the pilot circle over 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, according to his biography. Reagan pointed to the White House and said to wife Nancy, "Look honey, there's our little shack."

Mrs. Reagan had been scheduled to attend the helicopter's arrival but she ill with a bronchial infection, library executive director Duke Blackwood said.

After a welcoming ceremony, the helicopter was being moved to the nearby Air Force One Pavilion construction site to roost next to the gleaming silver, blue and white Boeing 707 until completion of the presidential transportation pavilion. The library addition will open next year.

The retired Boeing 707, which has its wings removed while in storage at the hilltop library, served as Air Force One for 28 years, ferrying Reagan and six other U.S. presidents. It was used by Nixon, Ford, Jimmy Carter, Reagan, Bill Clinton and both George Bushes.

The jet will be reassembled later this year to be on public display in 2005 when the pavilion opens with Air Force One, Marine One, a military fighter jet and a presidential limousine.

Lockheed Martin contracts with Kaman in Marine One battle (http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ct--kaman-marineone0317mar17,0,6393993.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire)

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. -- Lockheed Martin and Augusta Westland Bell say they will use a Connecticut-based company to work on the company's US101 helicopter if they win a bid to build the next version of Marine One.

The Bloomfield-based Kaman Aerospace Corp. would use its Connecticut facilities to help engineer the helicopters. Kaman would use its Jacksonville, Fla. and Wichita, Kan. facilities to perform metallic and composite structural manufacturing work.

The Maryland-based Lockheed Martin is ramping up its list of U.S. subcontractors to quell concerns that its US101 aircraft is partly foreign made. It is competing with Connecticut-based Sikorsky Aircraft for a contract to build 23 helicopters for the Marine's HMX Squadron, which is used to transport the president.

The winner is also likely to have an edge when the Pentagon looks to replace hundreds of aircraft in coming years.

Kaman is a contractor of major civil and military aviation programs, including the C-17 military transport and the SH-2G Super Seasprite naval helicopter.

Lockheed's US101 is taller and wider, has three engines, and there are more than 90 in service. Sikorsky's VH-92 Super Hawk is about two feet narrower, has two engines, and is built so it can be transported by C-5 and C-17 aircraft without major reassembly. Both use engines built by General Electric Co., in its Lynn, Mass., plant.

The companies submitted their bids in early February and the Navy is expected to make its decision in May or June.

The UK currently has around 44 EH101's, known here as Merlin HM MK1's, which I believe are anti-submarine variants of the standard EH101. These were brought into service between 1998 and 2002 to replace the ASW Sea Kings.

Happens to be my favourite helicopter right now! woot
