Fresh from rehab, Rep. Patrick Kennedy said yesterday he wants to be treated like an African-American from Washington if and when he gets charged for crashing his car on Capitol Hill.

Denying that he was drunk and or that he asked the Capitol Police for preferential treatment, Kennedy, a Rhode Island congressman, said he's prepared "in terms of bookings, in terms of mug shots, fingerprints, whatever they might have me do."

"It's what anyone else would have done to them if they were an African-American in Anacostia," Kennedy said in a shaky voice, referring to the mostly minority neighborhood in southeastern Washington.

Later, Kennedy fretted that "there are probably people who want to throw the book at me a little more to prove that they're not treating me special."

It's still not clear whether Kennedy will be called to account for smashing his Ford Mustang into a barrier near the Capitol building at 2:45 a.m. on May 4. He was driving without headlights and nearly collided with a police cruiser.

"The attorney general is still reviewing the events of that night," said Traci Hughes, a spokeswoman for the D.C. attorney general's office. "I can assure you that if any charges are brought in this case, he will be treated the same as anyone else in similar circumstances."

If I had, believe me, you would have read about it by now. OK? So I never made any request of it.

I expect at the end of the day to have made sure that I will have done the same thing, in terms of the charges, in terms of bookings, in terms of mug shots, fingerprints, whatever they might have me do, it's what anyone else would have done to them if they were an African American in Anacostia and they were picked up and they were -- stay overnight in a jail, because there was no one else to pick them up.

I intend to ask the court to make sure that I spend no less time, you know, in any accountability that anyone else would have spent under similar circumstances, and I've been insistent on that from the very beginning.

So I think the Capitol Police does a fantastic job of protecting all of us. I think they do a terrific job, and I certainly feel very grateful that they're there for us and for the Capitol.

But, as I said, this was not something that I sought special treatment for. And in fact right now there may be special treatment given to me in the effort to show that I wasn't treated special, which means that there are probably people who want to throw the book at me a little more to prove that they're not treating me special.

I'm happy to take all of that, because you know what? It was my actions, I'm held responsible for them, I'm going to take accountability for them, and then I want to just move on, because, you know, that's what it's all about to me."

Ted Kennedy in the late 1960's drove a car while drunk, car drove off a bridge, he got out of the car, left the passenger in the car. Walked home, talked to the family lawyer. 10hrs after the accident happened the Kennedy family decided to inform the authorities of the accident. The exact cause of the woman's death is unknown as an autopsy was never performed. Basically Uncle Teddy got away with manslaughter.
