I was talking to a RM last night about joining the RM's, I told him that I had once thought about heading for england, working therer for the amount of time required for citizenship and then join the RM's.
He said that I wouldn't need to live there and gain C'ship first, I could join the RM's first, and gain C'ship by serving.
Now was he talking pure crap, or is there a spot of truth in this?
He said that there were severeal Shouth Africans in the RM's that had joined that way.
I should maybe point oit at this time, that this particular RM was currently AWOL from exercise Joint Winter...
Can I trust this AWOL RM?

i am pretty sure that the u.s. military does the same thing. people without citizenship can join if they qualify, and then become a citizen after bootcamp. but i say again that this is what i know about the U.S. so it makes sense that they might do the same thing for the royal marines. but i honestly don't know.

I think you get your citizenship after 2 years of service in the US.

i heard differently from a marine depper who's dad is an INS agent. he said that you can come and do bootcamp and become a citizen right after. maybe he was wrong. i don't know.

i was talking to this waiter in Kelowna BC, and he said he was trying to move down to Arizona to join the Mraines, but he need to get US citizenship first
you have to be legal resident to serve , not citizen.

I'm from vancouver. I'm Canadian. I joined the British Army. All you need to do is email the branch you want to get into.. ask them for a OverSeas Application. Fill it out.. then they will send you a letter if you pass to come over and train..
This is all you need to join
Be in the commenwealth.
not be a screwup (have done criminal acts)
be in good health.
YOU MUST HAVE A SPONSOR. basically someone that your friends with that lives permanently in the UK. This took me almost a year to get. I didn't know anybody
visa that lats up to 6 months

the US and UK marines are both tough as nails. If you say one is better then another your a stupid ass :D US Marines is harder to join because of 911'th. Basically, if your not from the states good luck on joinning their military. You only need a visa to join but thats impossible to get because to get a visa you have to live in the states and you cant just move to the states. so its basically hard as hell.

I joined the british because I wanted to get away from my parents. We dont have the best relationship. I also joined because I was on the Canadian Skydive Assoc. Basically I skydived tones. Since canada doens't have a para regt. I joined the UK Para Regt. Also I went skydiving with some soldiers from 3rd Para at a place called Pitt Meadows a while ago.. I became good mates with a few of them. So I joined the paras to also be with some friends that I know.

Royal Marines are commandos on a par with Rangers, hence "99% need not apply" even if you manage to pass the PRMC you still have 32 weeks to fail.

He said its pretty hard to transfer once your in the CF..
He might be wrong but he said he has been in the Army for almost 7 years. just a heads up...

Your best bet is to discount what everyone else has said so far, and simply send a PM to Royal, or wait and see if he decides to reply to this thread. He is a serving RM officer. Get the real info from the horse's mouth, he'll tell you straight.

oh really, i thought it would be easy because were a commonwealth.
I just checked the necessary websites and it is written there that you need to be citizen of either UK, ireland or the commonwealth countries. But if you are commonwealth, you can not get into all the jobs available.I guess along the lines of intelligence work.As for joining the US military, you have to be either a US citizen or a permanent Resident. If you wanna go for US intelligence then you have to be a full citizen.Hope this helps
