View Full Version : Which Rifle?

Trying to decide which rifle to buy. I looked at Sako TRG 22, Armalite AR-30, Steyr SSG-69 and Tikka tactical all in .308 (have always had an interest in sniper rifles). Are there any others I should look at? My budget is between $1000-2200. I don't want to buy a rifle and then put more money into it to make it more accurate. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

without really knowing much about you, what you will use it for, there is nothing I can add.
Also taking a rifle out of a box, does not quarntee anything. Issues like fit, Pull lenght, etc all come into play for a highly accurate rifle. Also do you reload?

How much shooting experience do you have? What do you plan on using it for? Will this be your first gun?
You many want to look at the Remington 700 LTR.

Ok, just wanted to make sure, some pwople want to jump right into a "sniper rifle" as their first gun, lol.
I would really look into a 700 LTR, there darn fine rifles.

How do you reload 17 HMR? It's rimfire. Something new to the world of reloading?
Form personal experience, I'd stay AWAY form the Tikka Tactical, as it's a nice rifle, but it's a SALES rifle. Basically a nice Tikka hunting rifle with tons of tactical bullsh*t strapped on it to increase sales in that sector.
I've seen a few SAKO TRG's with the toe of the stock snapped right off. Dunno why, seems to be unusual, so I'd not worry alot. They're really friggin' smooth and accurate.
AR30 is more of a benchrest rifle in my humble opinion. Real nice rifle, if you're a benchrest guy, you'll probably like it!
Of your lot, I'd go with the SSG69, save for the strange proprietary mounts on the reciever. So, eh, maybe not. Awesome rifle though.
If you want a good longer range rifle, and are willing to spend $2,000 +/- on the rifle itself, action, stock, bedding, barrel, yadda yadda yadda, I'd suggest a Remington Custom Shop XB series. Good, very accurate "factory" rifles. Usually come with HS Precision or McMillian stocks. I prefer HS for their grippy material stuff, and their wrist/grip is thick enough for us big hands guys.
Hope you have fun!

Take a look at a Savage Model 10FP in .308...
With a McMillan stock.

There are couple CZ rifles out there in the same class as well.
Get a nice Leupold on it and you are good to go.
Does everything a Model 700 does.

Awesome friggin' point. BTW, if you don't like the feel of the McMillian stock, they now carry HS Precision stocks, which I personally like the grippy-sandy feel of a bit more.
The Savages aren't known for being pretty, but they are very very accurate out of the box. More accuracy than I can personally shoot out of it.

I love my Savage. It's a strong, accurate rifle. It'll hold a 1.75" group at 300m with factory 168gr Federal gold medal match. It's also very reasonable, in the $700 price range. Good luck.

I bought a Savage in .308 about a year ago. It is a very accurate rifle out of the box. I have yet to put any mods on it though. What all do you have on yours?

Just the basics. Harris 8-13" bipod, and a Leupold 4.5x14x40AO Tactical with a mil-dot reticle, with Leupold one-piece base and low rise rings.
