Blackburn was the guy who fell from the helicopter and I was curious, what happened to him? Did he ever pull through or did he die? Ive always wondered this.

Are you sure? I thought he was the first to die in the mission?

No, he was the first casualty, Sgt. Pilla was the first to die.

Where in the book do they talk about the problems with M16 regarding the .223?

Dennis G, I think its Paul Howe a Delta member who comments on the 5.56 round not being powerful enough. I don't remember exactcly where in the book it is but he says something like even thoe his bullets are tungsten carbide tipped its taking to many shots per target to knock them down. He then attributes some this to the fact that the Somalis are on drugs and talks about Gary Gordon or Randy Shutgart using the M14 because of their lack of confidence in the round. Its been awhile since I read it.

Military rounds are ineffective because it is Full metal Jacket Ammo, 7.62 is not much better than 5.56 which have some shock effects due to their higher veloicity. Hollowpints will knock everything down in a flash but are prohibited due to the Geneva convention for military use.
The statements that a 6.8 would be much better are bull****, because it is FMJ like other Military Ammo.

Bull. Plain Jane FMJ in 5.56mmN and even European 7.62mmN (German standard bullet uses a slightly thinner mantle than US standard bullet) has a rather large tendency to shatter when striking its target, causing massive tissue damage...
The problem with the "greentips"(don't remember M-nr) used in Somalia was that it was newly issued AP ammo, that refused to shatter, causing overpenetration and much less damage.
There is plenty of power in 5.56 to kill and maim.
Here is acouple of articles regarding wounding ballistics for those wanting to learn this stuff instead of just flowing with the rumormongers. ;)

High velocity rounds FMJ are extremely efficient. Ammo that won't penetrate body armour, magazine pouches and such are a lot less efficient in a military sense.

the problem is that 5.56 round was designed for kill people who wear body armor

6.8 and 7.62 ARE more effective than 5.56 because they have ALOT more energy behind the round and less energy ends up bleeding off at longer ranges. Backis is right, the ammo issued in Somalia was armor-piercing ammo that probably would hurt a normal person a good deal, but on a drugged-up person, they wouldn't notice the damage as much as they normally make a clean hole through your body unlike FMJ rounds.

Blackburn are currently managed by Greame Souness, and are one of a number of teams fighting relegation in the English Premiership. Hope that clears it up.

No, it was not. 5.56 was designed long before the level of protection soldiers have now
5.56 was designed to have a suppressive as well as a lethal effect.
A soldier can carry more 5.56, fire faster with accuracy and use controlled automatic fire.
Different types of ammunition is available, but I fail to see why when faced with a rag and bone mob any specialist ammunition would be used when FMJ would do the job.

Didn't he mean the round issued specifically in Somalia? M855?

Exactly. The round also has a flatter trajectory and is easier to hit with for teh average marksman.

But the fact remain, it was. :(
