U.S. Congress votes unanimously to thank Canada for extending Afghan mission
12:16:30 EDT Jun 13, 2006

WASHINGTON (CP) - The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution commending Canada for its commitment to Afghanistan.
Indiana Republican Dan Burton introduced the resolution saying he wanted U.S. legislators to recognize Canada's vote last month to extend the Afghan mission by two years into 2009.
The resolution passed by a vote of 409 to 0.
Burton says Canada's decision signals its commitment to the global war on terror and its friendship with the United States.
Burton says the vote is a small token of appreciation to Canada, which he says is facing its own growing threat of terrorists inspired by al-Qaida.

dangerclose is right: Canada is a so tempting prey they should thank the Yanks not to have swallowed them already.
Or is it because the Yanks remember the fasco of 1812 ? no need to thank the Yanks so but thanks the Brits instead. p-)

Why do we need resolutions to thank others? Why not just publicly thank Canada without passing or holding a vote? seems a bit silly.

That is what congress is doing, In their own way. it is showing that the WHOLE congress is agreeing to it, and not just one person or small group.

And so did England but I don't recall congress passing a resolution thanking England and Canada for helping us fight Hitler.

Canada is going out of their way by helping us fight terrorists in Afghanistan when it's in their best interest to do so? Recent events are just an example of how canadians are every bit in the crosshairs of islamic terror as we are. Besides, the last time the U.S. wanted to thank Canada by awarding medals to their snipers who saved the lives of our soldiers in afghanistan, the canadian government turned it down. Very classy.

But please, enlighten me further.
