SATURDAY, March 20 (HealthDayNews) -- While the majority of American college administrators are concerned about heavy student drinking, they're divided on how to tackle the issue, says a study in the March issue of the Journal of American College Health.

The survey, completed in 2002, found that 81 percent of 747 college administrators of four-year colleges said student alcohol use was a problem or major problem on campus. That's much higher than the 68 percent of college administrators who expressed the same concerns in a 1999 survey.

Administrators of large schools (more than 10,000 full-time undergraduates) and highly competitive schools were most likely to consider student alcohol use to be a major problem, this new survey revealed.

"It is clear that the nation's colleges are collectively concerned about student drinking on their campuses, but are quite divided about what programs to put in place to alleviate the problem of heavy and destructive drinking," study author Henry Wechsler, director of the College Alcohol Studies program at Harvard School of Public Health, says in a prepared statement.

The various prevention measures include:

Thirty-four percent of colleges have banned alcohol on campus for any student, regardless of age. Those most likely to have alcohol-free campuses include small schools, schools in Southern states, less competitive schools and historically black colleges.
Forty-three percent of all schools prohibit alcohol in all campus residence halls. This includes schools that are alcohol-free. Also, 81 percent of colleges offered some alcohol-free dorms or floors in residences.
Alcohol use is restricted by 44 percent of colleges in at least four of the following events: home athletic contests, home tailgate events, home pre- or post-game parties, homecoming celebrations, on-campus dances or concerts, on-campus banquets or receptions, and alumni events. Nearly half of small schools had these restrictions, compared with about a fifth of the large schools.
The survey found that 84 percent of schools provide alcohol education for freshmen, 72 percent provide it for sorority members, and 69 percent provided it for athletes.
Half the colleges conduct social norms marketing campaigns, which use education and motivation to correct student misconceptions about the drinking behavior of their peers.
Counseling and treatment for alcohol abuse is offered by 90 percent of colleges.
An assigned substance abuse official is employed by 81 percent of colleges, and 61 percent of colleges have a task force to deal with substance abuse issues.

I am so glad the legal age here is 18. Some of my best times here so far have involved drinking with friends, they wouldn't have been nearly as good if we'd all been sober.

I think because we can drink openly there's more limitations on how much we have. There are more people around to say 'you've had enough', and to prevent the worst excesses. If we were drinking illegally, we'd probably be more likely to go to those excesses because there would be no authority to stop us, and it would be more daring, like here you get 15 and 16 year olds totally rat arsed because they don't have a limiting power to their drinking.

So in short, I believe open but access regulated access to alcohol could help in the US.

Well, here are some party pictures of my nation at the University (there is 13 nations at
the University), my nation has approximately 5000 members, and about 400 of them are
"active". A lots of (cheap) alcohol, but what the hell, most University students are
mature and calm people, so where "the problem" is I don´t know. I doubt that few, if
any people turn out as alcoholics because of these parties.

And guess who´s me :)

Bartenders, one beer usually costs about 15-20 kr, or about 2 Euro.

Looking nice Mustamato, we have those kinds of parties too at our university and yes they are sweet :) and sometimes involve alcohol abuse but I don't think they lead to addictions.

Here in Belgium legal drinking age is 16 but 12 year olds can bu booze if they want to and I don't think we have an alcholical problem here.
I personally believe it's much better having parents gradually introducing you to alcohol by letting you taste some of it so that you know how to handle with it when you reach an adult age. Then to never introduce people to alcohol untill they reach age 21 and then allow them to booze as much as they want.

Besides some people are more ****e to forms of addiction then others. Hence why some people smoke and other's dont.

Holy ****...you call 2 euros for a beer CHEAP!? On one university in the south they've got some special cafe's that are open at certain times, and you pay 50 eurocents for a beer.

Well Sweden has the worlds highest taxes, usually on a pub a beer costs about
39 to 50 Kr, or 4-5 Euros. 90+ % of that is just boooze tax. A Red Bull and vodka
would cost you about 8-10 Euros. That´s why people here drink as hell before they
go out, usually imported (smuggled) beer and booze from Germany:

Zaranoff, cheap German poison, but with a price of about 4 Euro bottle,
it´s probably the most popular booze in southern Sweden.

I've been drinking for a long time, long before being the legal drinking age. Its all up to the person who is consuming the beers/liqour to know how much they can handle, if they cant do that then obviously they shouldnt be drinking. Even I know my limits very well and respect em and never try to push them, its better not to victimise yourself.

If you can do 15 Canadian Lucky's in 1 hour and a half you'd be my hero and I'd name any childern I have after you.

Most alcohol I've ever had, in one go, well night, was three bottles of Stella Artois, and that was only 'cause there was no decent cordial or pop around. I personally don't see the point to getting drunk, stupid crap that only leads to negative things.
