Khomeini's grandson slams Tehran regime

TEHRAN, June 14 (UPI) -- The grandson of Iran's revolutionary Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini says the republic has devolved into a dictatorship that should be toppled by other countries.

Speaking to the al-Arabiya network on the 17th anniversary of the republic's founding by his late grandfather, Ayatollah Hussein Khomeini denounced the "dictatorship of clerics" leading the fundamentalist Islamist state.

"My grandfather's revolution has devoured its children and has strayed from its course," he said.

He went on to suggest U.S. President George Bush should send troops to occupy Iran, al-Arabiya said.

"Freedom must come to Iran in any possible way, whether through internal or external developments. If you were a prisoner, what would you do?" Khomeini told the network.

He said while he personally favors women wearing a hijab, or veil, Iran needed to "pass a law which makes the wearing of the hijab an optional choice for Iranian women."

For the last three years, Iran has kept Khomeini under surveillance and has banned him from giving interviews to the Iranian media, the Middle East Media Research Institute said.

So the revolution lead by his grandfather, who was a fundamentalist cleric and had himself installed as Supreme Leader (for life) is being lead astray because the clerics are in control. A dictatorship of the clergy is exactly what Khomeini wanted to and did implement. He can't claim to speak on his grandfather's behalf if he opposes exactly those institutions and trends which his grandfather championed. If anything, Iran has moved away from Khomeini's strict adherence to Islamic law and influence has flowed away from the clergy into civilian authorities.

Just another nobody trying to get attention by invoking his family.

There's another thread going on about this:

To sum up what I said: the revolution was somewhat "hijacked" very early on. Khomeini himself learned of the hostage taking after it took place, and that was just the beginning. Very few of the original players are still in the game.

I believe the student group let him know about the takeover before it took place and Khomeini played it off like he didn't know to the press.

The way the Atlantic got the story, they made him aware of their intentions, but carried it out before he was in full control or in any poistion to do anything about it. He was faced with a fait accompli. The students were only the visible element of it. They were controlled by individuals who had their own plans.

I'm not trying to whitewash Khomeini, he had the influence to have the hostage released much sooner than they were in the events, I was pointing out that very early on, the revolution became a power struggle, which makes Khomeini's grandson' statements unsurprising. The movement was not monolithic.
