United States Army Sgt. Raul Lopez (L) models a prototype of the 'Future Warrior' combat uniform as army equipment specialist Dan Harshman describes the 'Scorpion ensemble' uniform that he is wearing, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (news - web sites) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, May 22, 2003. The men were participating in the grand opening of the MIT Institute for Soldier Nanotechnolgy, which will develop microscopic high technology that can be incorporated into the equipment and apparel of U.S. troops.

Looks like a scene from Robocop.

I was reading about this in a book about the future of the American military, they had some pretty cool stuff coming out.
This "Future Warrior" thing was expected to be coming into service around 2010 apparently.
They also had a load of stuff about reactive armour on tanks which is basically armour that has two layers with the outside layer divided up into very small sections each with it's own explosive charge that will blow off that section. It then has sensors that can detect where an enemy rocket, or whatever, will hit and just before it hits the respective section of the armour is blown off and the rocket explode's away from the tank disbanding most of the energy into the air therefore avoiding damage to the tank .. pretty cool.
It also had a section about the future of aircraft carriers. They reckoned that in the future (15 - 25 years) we wouldn't have aircraft carriers as we know them but instead we would basically have an airstrip in the water, roughly 2 km's long they reckoned, that would be built from sections that would be transported seperately and then connected together whereever they were needed. This would basically end up acting as a total water bourne military base with landing ships, tanks, planes, soldiers etc ... i reckon that sounded pretty cool too.
Here's a picture of the F-35, the new vertical take off fighter that the military hope to replace the harrier with:

They hope to replace lots of Jets with the F-35 not just the Harrier.
F15, F16, F18 are some... with the exception of the Super Hornet of course. I had the priviledge of seeing the X-35C (navy variant) in person at Patuxent River NAS about a year ago and it is very impressive.

My buddies on the Nimitz already got rid of their 14's for 18E's. I guess this is the future. Is the F-35C aslo VSTOL?

I recently was at an airshow at Cherry Point MCAS, NC and I dont know if it was just me but I noticed the Super Hornets are ALOT louder and deeper than the previous Ds and Cs. When they are actually flying in the air its somewhat difficult to tell the differance except probably the most obvious is the air inlets diamond shape on the Es and Fs as opposed to the rounded on the others. A B2 also flew over and I never realized how quiet they are... if you were in a factory with machines making noise and people talking it wouldnt even have to be that loud inside and you would never hear one of those fly over.

The guy in the black gear, his arm armor looks alot like biking armor. :D
I cant see if he has any special armor on his legs though. I like the black and grey US flag too.

This Gear wont be in service in 2010!
the land warrior program will be in use in 2010
This is not a part of the land warrior program![/quote]

I wasn't talking about the land warrior project, i was talking about the future warrior one as shown in the pictures. I'm only going by what I read and I read that this gear would be coming into service around 2010 ... I can't corroborate this with any sources but i'm just letting you know I didn't make it up.

2010...hmmm, never is more likely.
I realise that's what you read...it's all very funny, that's all.
Nanotechnology seems a bit far fetched. Maybe they should concentrate on getting their troops to use their existing equipment better instead!
For all that technology, it would still only take a few bullets to kill the bloke, or a mortar round to kill a fire team. Cost of a few rounds vs cost of Robocop...?
As far as that stuff about tank defense goes, it's all true. If you check out some russian sites, you'll find that they've already developed it and it's gone through testing with flying colours.
The ERA is in service, active defense systems like Arena cost too much, but work and SHTORA laser jammers are fitted to the latest vehicles.

I Agree Sabre, right now the land warrior systems batteries only last for something like 45 minutes. I know conflicts are getting shorter, but come on! This thing isnt going to stand up in the field. There is an old saying thats rings true---If you put an Infantry Grunt in a closed padded cell with two steel ball-bearings, in two minutes he would break one and loose the other! Ithink the designers of these new systems should put that at the top of their list.

Indeed nano tech is viable and real, but the battery tech we have today is decades old, basically, it sucks. Batteries have been neglected over the past few decades as people focused more on actaully advancing the tech that could use those batteries or a regular power supply, but now we have all these fancy things and big, fast-draining batteries. So, we need to focus on developing new batteries now. Unfortunately, batteries are hard to make, esp. good ones, despite what you might think. Making major advances in batteries is even harder, since known materials can only hold so much charge, then they run out. Several ideas are out there but it will take at least a decade before we see anything big that can be mass produced.

I was out biking today and I noticed how much it harder it was to breathe with a helmet on that has a mouth guard. Even though it has really good ventilation with one big vent in the middle and two on the side. Eventually condensation builds up on the vents. With the full helmets that I have been seeing with all the future warrior stuff...have they found a way cure this problem. I was thinking there may be a tube like those camelbak systems and all they do is bite down on the tube and some oxygen with come out. Even with lots of ventilation slits, the helmet will become like a sauna.
