I am not sure what section to post this in, but i figured this was the most appropriate. I would like some help figuring out what division my father served with during Vietnam. I ask him about his time in the army very often, but he has forgotten the most of the military specific stuff that I am interested in. He is not losing his memory or anything, he was just never very interested in the army, he did his 1 year overseas after ROTC and then left the army. He gave his uniform away to a new officer when he left (so the new soldier would not need to buy his uniform) and as a result, the only thing I have of his service is a plak (sp?) he was given when he left Vietnam.

It says : Presented to 1st LT. ----------- from the officers and NCOs of the 120th Trans CO (LT. TRK) 48th Trans GP. BINH THUY, VIETNAM. Jan71-Jan72.

On the left side of the award is a insignia in orange and black with the words "service forward" written underneath. On the right side of the award is an insignia shaped like a shield with a sword in the middle pointing up. The shield is colored yellow on the left, blue in the center and red on the right side. Would the shield shaped insignia on the right side of the award be his division patch?

I would like to know what division my dad served with and what patch he would have worn on this uniform. I have tried searching on the internet for information about the units described on the award, but I was not very good at searching. Does anyone on here have any idea where I could find the information or have any clue as to what the insignias on the award are?
Thanks for any help, I would like to know more about what my dad did in Vietnam.

Sorry for the crappy spelling, it was never my strong point.

thank you very much for your responses. All the information was useful and I am searching the site the Hollis posted. Just one last question. Would the 120th company, or the 48th GP have been part of a larger division, or was the group an individual unit? Would my father have worn the 48th GP insignia on his uniform or a different patch?

Thanks

The only thing I can add is from "Vietnam Order of Battle" by Shelby L. Stanton. Most of this you already have above, just confirms.

48th Transportation Group (Motor Transport)

Arrived Vietnam: 8 May 1966
Departed Vietnam: 13 June 1972*
Previous Station Fort Eustis

*On August 1970 group reduced to zero strength and spaces used for DELTA Logistical Support Activity

The 48th Transportation Group (Motor Transport) had the specific mission of carrying out motor transportation operations in the III and IV Corps Tactical Zones, including line haul, local haul within the Long Binh post, port and beach operations, retrograde equipment transport, and driveaway operation at Newport terminal. Serving under the U.S. Army Support Command, Saigon, it was variously located at Qui Nhon, Long Binh and Binh Thuy.
