I recently read an article by Kokalis (of Shotgun News fame) about the French FAMAS rifle. What surprised me was he mentioned that US arms importer and seller Century Arms had at one point imported a semi-auto version of the FAMAS for the civilian market. Can anyone confirm this, or has anyone seen one?

I'd LOVE to own one!woot

Thanks!

What is it about the FAMAS that you want one over an AR?

If you can ever find one, you better be ready to hand the guy a wad of cash about the size of a dictionary. Yes, they're floating around the US, but I've never seen one sold in any shop, only on gunbroker once.

The only semi-auto service bullpup I've ever seen in the US is the Steyr AUG.

Wayback in 1990 Century offered the FAMAS in the US and the MAS 223 for about $1325. It looked pretty much the same as the military version except for the deletion of the grenade launching rings. I believe only a handful got in so there extremely rare (and astromically expensive) nowadays.

FAMAS is nice... had one for years but now sold it. For the money I bought 3 (!) new guns which are more reliable than the FAMAS and I am not afraid of shooting because they are collectors items.

There is a handful of L85 & L86s out there too. One L85 was sold for $10K ten years ago, and an L86 for $21K a year ago.

Is it true that the early FAMAS rifles only take a special clip and not a stag mag used by nato?

yes. The G2 and later models were the only ones to finally accept STANAG mags
