I can tell you that is an extremely nice and safe area to live in. Caruth Haven, Southwestern, Mockingbird, Lovers, Knox-Henderson, Lemmon, and Hall are the best places to live in Dallas. I live on Lower Greenville Ave., so I am fairly close to those apartments.
I'm sure Dallas sucks when you're in grandma's little basement, but the Dallas I know is a lot of fun. Good bars/clubs/resturants, a lot going on all the time, VERY GOOD INFRASTRUCTURE. That may not strike you as something special, but for the most part, our roads and interchanges are the best in the South, I know, and maybe even the country.
You're going to enjoy living in that part of town. You've gotta PM me when you get down (or up) here, there's a few places you should see.

Name Taken, I forgot to mention that Dallas is an extremely conservative city. I don't know where you come from, but be ready for Neiman Marcus Republicans and Christian conservatives. Don't get me wrong, folks from Dallas know how to party and have a good time, and there are plenty of drinks and joints and cocaine and anything else you might be into...just bear in mind, we didn't desegregate until 1975!! ;)
It's a wierd conservatism. Very materialistic and impersonal, yet fun and wild. Dallas is a good mix.

High 5 is just awesome...WTF ElHombre, Austin and Houston are so much worse than Dallas. Dallas traffic is ****ing easy like Sunday morning compared to those snakepits down South.
ElHombre, have you eaten at Cantina Laredo? It's over in Lakewood, and you have my highest recommendations to eat there. It is the original El Chico, but CL is gourmet Mexican food that can't be beaten. Pappasito's is a close second.

Houston STRONG!!!
I have to admit, I had a hell of a time in Houston about two weeks ago. I played a gig down at the Mucky Duck (great imported drafts there, I had the Hefewiezen |sp?|) and our friend/clothing sponsor Dylan took us to this all-black blues shack. 3 buckets of Busch cans later, and me and Sara are sitting in with the band, playing Etta James' "At Last". These folks went nuts, screaming at Sara "sing it, baby, sing that ****!!!" They did a damn good cover of "John the Revelator", too. Houston is one of America's great cities, I am beginning to see that.

Yes and no. Yes, I've been there, but no - not recently. I'm planning a day trip soon as I've heard lots of good things about the city. Plus, I want to see your new aquarium.

Chicago is a great city because it experiences all four seasons (weather is important to me - you'll find out why when you're in the Army), has awesome architecture and food, great culture, its the home of the Cubs, has the best lakeshore in the world - it even beats most sea shores I've been to, and the best bars anywhere.
I must say though - you're story about Houston gives me a hankerin' for some Etta James now.

Chicago sounds like a fun town to spend a week.
I got another Etta James story. It's rather long and requires a set-up, and it doesn't have any snappy punchlines.
I graduated a year early from High School and went straight to a community college, where I studied music. I play guitar, and had never played bass, but this vocal jazz group needed a bass player, and I decided I'd play so that they could have a real band backing them.
All semester, there was this lovely girl from Italian descent who I could never talk to because
A.) I was extremely intimidated
B.) I was 17 years old and she was 21 (woot woot Women who are older than me are hot!!)
C.) I could barely keep up with the music and learning a new instrument/style/reading music
She was always gone after rehearsal, while I was packing up my equipment. We didn't speak all semester.
So the weekend of the show comes, and we're rehearsing on stage for 8 hours the day before. We had an hour break before we had to be back to rehearse. I finally worked up enough balls to talk to her. We agreed to go to some burger place, and we had a lot of fun talking and flirting. I asked her if she wanted to have some coffee over at my house before we had to be back. It took about 10 minutes before she leaned up against the wall, ya know, all helpless like. I asked her if I could kiss her (she stills makes fun of me), and we were together for about 4-5 months.
I told you that to tell you this.
I got this call last spring from her. Out of the MFing blue. She asked me if I wanted to come over and see her new place. We were totally platonic at first, then we had some beer and started listening to an Etta James greatest hits record. Just like that, a few songs, a beer or two, and we were like two dogs rolling around and chasing each other.
I find it amazing that after all of human progres, after all the technologies and distractions, one of the few things that modern people have in common with those long ago is that phenomenon - music, alcohol, laughter, passion. And did Etta James know that the way she sang could do that to people? When she sat in that studio and recorded her vocal take however many times she had to, and that years later we heard that track and just collapsed?

Dallas Traffic > Austin Traffic.............Atx has traffic but maybe 45 mins at the most to get from downtown to the outlaying suburbs.
Ever been to 6th Street? Something everyone should do once, although Deep Ellum and westend in Big D are pretty cool to.

Awesome response guys, thanks! As far as Dallas food goes, my finacee (who was born there and lived/lives in Longview) is always talking about smucker's. Apparently the best burgers in Dallas. Any who can show a challenger to this, I'd be interested.
Cheers for the responses, it's always good to have a few good contacts in a big city who know where everything is, etc.

Longview, huh? That's where all the dead bodies are buried, that and Brian County, OK... ;)
Haven't heard of Smucker's. Adair's Saloon makes an extremely good burger, and it's an old-school Dallas honky-tonk institution.

some good joints south of the river.
mexican: the tejano restraunt on zang near davis. there's also a meat market on jefferson. they make great fajita meat, ready for the grill. there's also a great totilla place just up the road. don't recall the name, but it has a green awning on the front.
BBQ: aw c'mon. it's Texas fer chrissakes. okay, odom's BBQ on singleton (lock your doors, though. it's a rough part of town for gringos. ;-) ). also some great places on industrial, just ignore the ***** bars (or not. just remember, the local jail's right up the street).
french (yes, i'm serious): LaMadeline. in arlington, next to the parks mall. LaSenora brought me there.
sandwiches: sandwackers (locations in duncanville and grand prairie). the d-ville place is so popular that it's called the second city hall.
books: half-price books (locations all over). the chain got its start here in dallas. it's main store is on loop 12 just east of hwy 75 (central). i could have bought a car with all the money i've spent there. also, border's books at preston and walnut hill.
hamburgers: chapps (various locations). burrrp. also, charburger. corner of wheatland and clark rd.
a warning about greenville avenue: there is almost nowhere to park except for the residential neighborhoods and the locals don't exactly take kindly to rowdiness. Ye Have Been Warned.
