Springfield Arsenal, Mas.

the museum (pics with the guns behind the glass) was cool
but the "gun room" tour was awesome..limit to 10, and they do 4 tours a month. theres ALOT of firearms up there, alot of "one of a kind" and prototypes and what not..mostly old stuff (before WW1 is what i consider old lol) but they had a good deal of WW1 + weapons alot of diffrent 1903's

It and the EM-1 were similar prototypes developed in the late 40's early 50's to replace the Lee-Enfield. It used a .280 (7mm) intermediate round (pretty similar to the 6.8 cartridge that everyone raves on about being a brilliant all purpose "modern" round). Unfortunately the US was having none of it, and pushed the 7.62 x 51 onto NATO. Attempts to rebarrel the EM-2 were done, and several actually exist in 7.62 NATO and also 30-06(!), but it was abandoned mid-50's and the UK just bought and licenced the FN FAL.

A great shame, as the EM-2 showed a lot of promise with many innovative features, like the first practical bullpup design, and inbuilt (non-magnifying) optical sight as standard. In fact, the optical sight was trialled on the L1A1 SLR prototype as the UNIT sight.

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/2907/10006824wz.th.jpg (http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10006824wz.jpg)Holy crap, what are those all early-model FALs? They don't look like T48s (I think the cocking handle is wrong)?! Are they trials rifles? What a gold mine!

Early US trial FALs were actually made in Worcester but Worcester's a boring dump now. Shame on my home state, one of the most anti-gun states in the union... Sad that so many people there are completely ignorant about stuff like this. It's depressing how the MA firearms industry has collapsed and the Minuteman tradition has evaporated.
