View Full Version : M16a4
What rail system do current military production M16A4's use? Is it available commercially? FN's picture of the A4 does not include the rails. Does FN install them or is this done post-delivery?

Knights Armament Company, Rail Adapter System, M-5 for M-16 series rifles. Yes, commerically available! Yes, these are now installed directly at the FN plant.

If you want more general info on M-16A4s etc,, go to >AR15.com.
They are pretty good, mostly civilian equipment.

@ F.N.M.I. It depends on the contract as to how weapons are spec'ed. For instance, the M16A4 as pictured is from a Army contract, with conventional heat shield fore grips. The Marine corp. contract M16A4's on the other hand get R.A.S. Rail fore grips with Picatinny rails. I heard a rumor last year that the Army was considering the R.A.S. Rail system in further contracts. I'm still waiting to see this rumor come to flurition.

The Army has been fitting the M5 RAS to their M16A4s (and the M4 RAS to their M4/A1s) as well. There's even a term M16A4 "Modular Weapon System" or MWS that was floating around for rifles fitted with it (FM 3-22.9/23-9 uses this designation and treats the RAS as standard for M4 carbines and M16A4 rifles).

Simply put the M16A3 is the M16A2 with an S-1-F trigger group, while the M16A4 is the M16A2 with a flat top reciever. Both the US Army and the USMC deploy the KAC M5 RAS with their M16A4s, though the US Army sometimes uses the term M16A4 MWS for this configuration.

M4A3? There is no official designation beyond A1. M4A3 is a construct of manufacturers to assist in helping people differentiate between fixed carry handle guns (usually referred to as "A2"s) and detachable carry handle ones (usually referred to as "A3" or "A4"s).

Yea I threw the "A3" on there as that is the civilian designation for the flat-top receiver. (Which was contradictory anyway, as that is a 14.5" SBR in civilian terms. Meh.)
No, not my collection, just a really good pic I grabbed off the net a long time ago. It's come in handy on many occasions. The owner of the collection posts on arfcom, but I don't know under what name. I only have one AR, as seen in my profile.
