I would have thought that Irish would have a stronger showing across the country. And what's up with the south being "American" decent? They already have categories for native American, so wtf is an "American"? Do they not know what their heritage is, or are they too patrotic to admit that their family might have foreign roots? And do they really need a category for Puerto Rican? That seems like a no brainer, "whoa, the entire island of Puero Rico claimed Puerto Rican as their heritage...hmmm, interesting..."

Easy, folks call themselves American because their bloodline is to muddled to be considered anything else. If your original ancestors circa 1800 were German, and then inter-married throughout the generations with english dutch irish stos italians and such for the next century or two what would you call yourself? either 'white' or American.
Hell look at me, my father is half black half white (Irish) while my mother is half Shawnee and a quarter black and another quarter white (unknown background) what the hell am I supposed to be?
