Yes, the 101st Airborne Division (re-designated as Air Assault in 1974) experimented with different colored berets to distinguish them from the maroon berets worn by airborne units of the US Army - some time in the early 1980s. Light blue was one of these, but there were also dark blue, lime green, and a few other colors. US Army airborne units were officially granted permission to wear the maroon beret in 1980, although for several years prior to this the wear of the maroon beret had been unofficially encouraged by local airborne unit commanders as a method of promoting esprit de corps.
Interesting, thanks.

His baret in combination with the 'logo', or I prefer to call it an 'emblem', means he is an engineer assigned to the Air Assault Brigade of the Dutch Army. This is simply said I'm not going to explain all the regulations about the emblems, barets and organisation of the Dutch Army, if you don't mind. I can tell a lot about it but I will try to keep it short:
First of all, the Dutch Army has in general 4 types of barets:
darker green (basic), green (Commando's), black (Cavalry) and red (Air Assault)
http://www.landmacht.nl/binaries/03_20_genie_tcm31-55479.jpg
This emblem is from the Regiment "Genie" or translated "engineers". Normaly (when an engineer is assigned to the regular brigades) this emblem is attached to a darker green baret (with the pictured background patch by the way), but this is not the case when an engineer is assigned to the 11th Air Assault Brigade. All the members of this Brigade wear a Red Baret, support units (like the 11th Engineer Company) included. The dark background patch behind this emblem will than be removed and the emblem will be placed without the background on a red baret. Why? Because with a background patch the red baret is not good looking :). The background patch stays (in most cases) in place on the other 3 types of barets (green, darker green and black), where there is no problem of 'good looking'.

This emblem on the picture has by coincidence a red background patch but that doesn't mean (in principle) it always has to be placed on a red baret.
It's from the Infantry Regiment "Stoottroepen" or freely translated "storm troops". Today you will only see this emblem in combination with a red baret because the only (currently active) untis of this Regiment are assigned to 11th Air Assault Brigade. These units are 13th Infantry Battalion Air Assault and 11th Mortar Company.
http://www.knvol.nl/images/images01/C11lmb.jpg
This Brigadier General is of course not assigned to 11th Engineer Company, the highest rank of this company is a Major. On this picture he is the commanding officer of the 11th Air Mobile Brigade (he was untill 2006), and therefore assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) of the Brigade. Then why is he wearing a Engineer emblem on his baret? Simply because his specialization/completed training is that of an engineer.
There are a lot of regulations/traditions about Dutch Army military units and their emblems. This explaination is just a small part of the whole, but I hope enough for a clear answer to your question.

And welcome to MP.net!! There's a very large Dutch Military topic on here: http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=76503

In Russia green berets are worn by FSB Border Guards special units as part of full (parade), service and field uniform. Guard of Honour also may wear green berets.

first one is pretty old one, i think end of 60s till 80, second from 80s till beginning of 90s.
Also, interior troops recon units have dark green\olive berets of different shades, but it’s not official, AFAIK, and one should pass through qualifications (like maroon beret) to have right to wear it.

Sorry for poor picz, but my private photoarchive’s lost – disk failure(
Oh, and one more - according to latest FSB order on uniforms the beret should be light green;)

The background patch stays (in most cases) in place on the other 3 types of barets (green, darker green and black), where there is no problem of 'good looking'.
http://www.landmacht.nl/binaries/03_09_stoot_tcm31-55475.jpg
This emblem on the picture has by coincidence a red background patch but that doesn't mean (in principle) it always has to be placed on a red baret.

RNLMC has the Unit Intervention Marines (Counter Terrorism), the Mountain Leaders (obvious...) and Maritime Special Operations. All of them cooperate with dutch commando's in e.g. Task Force Viper, the SF-part of Task Force Uruzgan.
And as far as the green berets as such are concerned: as a dutch marine you can follow the AACC with the Brits, which acts as a substitute for the ECO (Elementary Commando Course) of the KCT (if you're AACC and would like to join KCT, you can skip the ECO).
There's still a lot of cooperation; the green beret is just no longer part of it.

Sorry guys for starting another beret thread... but I just hate to see the boys in BLACK beret get left out. Even though the RED & GREEN berets have all the glamor, the black beret is a welcome sight when the going gets tough and the Cavalry is here to save the day...
It is the symbol for most of the armored forces in the world, the decisive force in many battles. I myself serve in the Singapore Armored Corps during my National Service, and I am proud to say that only the Red, Khaki, and Black berets are allowed to be worn with our ceremonial uniform.

Unfortunately for you the RNLMC's beret colour is dark blue. You'd better edit your post or some marine will find you and kill you for this....
The only ones wearing black berets in the Netherlands are the army's cavalry units, both tank and recce.

I think it is very silly to wear berets in the field. So out of place and inconvenient.
In Finland only the Panssariprikaati (Armoured Brigade, my guys) wears black berets.

As in other countries, in Portugal the Black Beret is associated with Cavalry. It should be noticed, however, that in Portugal the Army Military Police is part of the Cavalry and therefore they also use the Black Beret

Black Beret. The tradition of wearing black berets began with armored units. In 1924 the British Royal Tank Regiment adopted the first modern military beret, based on the Scottish highland bonnet and French Bretonne beret. The regiment selected the headgear for its practicality--brimless for use with armored vehicle fire control sights and black to hide grease stains. In the US Army, HQDA policy from 1973 through 1979 permitted local commanders to encourage morale-enhancing distinctions, and Armor and Armored Cavalry personnel wore black berets as distinctive headgear until CSA Bernard W. Rogers banned all such unofficial headgear in 1979. Rangers received authorization through AR 670-5, Uniform and Insignia, 30 January 1975, to wear black berets. Previously, locally authorized black berets had been worn briefly by the 10th Ranger Company (Airborne), 45th Infantry Division, during the Korean War before their movement to Korea; Company F (LRP), 52d Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, in 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam; Company H (Ranger), 75th Infantry, 1st Cavalry Division, in 1970 in the Republic of Vietnam; and Company N (Ranger), 75th Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade, in 1971 in the Republic of Vietnam.
Top told stories about being a private in an Armored Cavalry unit and wearing the black beret, and that eventually they would try to take the Stetson away from us...he was glad to get out before that happened and would get pissed talking about it.

Never wore it in "combat" per se, but in nearly all training exercises (even in winter).
Driving in convoy on dusty backroads, it would end up looking tan by the end of
the exercise.
For exercises we would have preferred anything but a beret.

in combat and field I worn my kevlar like 99.9% of the time, I can only thing of 5 times of wearing a patrol cap. The US Army is big on wearing full bro gear everywhere, for everything, with the line train as you fight.

I've seen quite a few comments along these lines, but never really understood why. Is it just because they lack practicability? Uncomfortable? Or what?

A U.S. Marine officer returned to the states after being assigned as a liason officer to the British Royal Marines. He was so excited about the beret he began asking many of his fellow Marines about the Corps adopting it.
He didn't find much enthusiasm until one Marine sergeant said "hell yes" he was all for it. His explanation: that he liked to get into bar fights and if it became a part of the uniform he could get in a lot more fights without getting in trouble because he wouldn't have to start the brawl.
Having said that, I really do like the beret and even more so the British Royal Marines.

Err. . . . . I think the big white painted vehicle is a clue.

Yeah more like st:drunk day!!
And btw what is so special with a beret? I mean really!?!
Ok you have to go through (often) some though **** to get it!
But how practical is it? Its useless in the field!
Give me a booniehat anyday!!
Guess thats up to where you did your service, my platoon had to do a 6 day exercise to get it, with an average of 2 hours of sleep at a good night, minimum of food. Speedmarching, reconnaissance ops, various of physical, shooting and first aid tests, wintertraining including basic survival in sub-arctic climate on a swedish fjäll. And it ended with a SERE-exercise after a quite grooling march.
Anybody not completing it would not get their beret. Hence the beret stands for your pride as a soldier completing your basic training and beret-exercise.
Instead of getting ****load of bars for every single training you'll do during your basic training, you get a beret.
But as i said, not everybody does that, alot of branches and bases just seems to be handing them out like its candy, which is bs.

Well, in Denmark all combat arms soldiers wear black berets. Support and service support arms wear green berets as do the Home Guard. Military police wear red berets. Special forces have burgundy berets. The Army Air Service had blue-gray berets but now they are part of the Air Force and don't wear berets anymore. I don't think I forgot anyone. Sorry, no pics atm.

Exceptions are the 2nd battalion, who wear Tan berets, and the Telemark Battalion, who wear Jade-green berets.
Panserbataljonen (the armour battalion) and Kampeskadronen (the combat squadron) still wear black berets.
I myself was in Panserbataljonen.
Only decent picture I could find of me with this wonderful piece of cranium decoration:

Jesus, do we really need dedicated threads for the color of a beret ? Why not regroup them all into one, between the red berets, the green and the blacks...

I heard that Marines rejected beret coz it's "too girly" true/false?
I would not put it quit that way.
I think the Americans have always had an issue with the French which is why it was not too popular historically. The US Army only adopted the beret to help with recruiting.
The marines are much more adamant about not designating any particular unit as a "special" force. The view is that a marine is a marine and there's no room for special marines. Any kind of different uniform for a Recon marine would be frowned upon institutionally. Typically, the only way to identify a recon marine is by the SCUBA and JUMP badges.

These Swedish paratroopers are being awarded the Swedish parachutist qualification insignia - the spread winged eagle.Sweden is one of the few nations to have a parachute qualification insignia which does not reflect the parachute in the design.

The spread wing eagle is not the Swedish armed forces jump wing. It´s more like the US Navy Special Warfare insignia, i.e only awarded to one type of soldier. Only paras wear these, not those who are only parachute qualified.
The SF-badge looks more like jump wings. A pair of wings, a sword, an anchor and a parachute.

Again, only worn by one type of soldier, those in the special forces.
