Hello all,

My first post after lurking and learning for awhile. I have searched the site and found quite a few links and sources for pictures of this conflict, but haven't found much in the way of film footage. I also Googled and found some, but not much. Anybody here have any sources for film/video footage? Thanks much!

I love this kind of stuff as well. Do a search because there is a pretty good thread of photo stuff as well as some vids too. I've heard of some good torrents floating around but I've never had luck finding them.

Good luck.

Thanks for the links. I already found those along with some others, but I am just looking for more. Perhaps something along the lines of documentaries or even footage shot by Soviet troops or journalists. I know those would be rare to find!

Hiya

here are some cool bits and pieces, again not all directly related to soviet afgan war, but I assume u guys probaby have a good colleciton allready :)

totally unrelated to afghan soviet war, but gansta' afghan soldiers can never go amis! :D

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/6266/23cb7jc.jpg

old wwI tank(i woudl be specific, but im a plane guy). Afghanistan is a great place for old weapons of war to turn up, Recently some CR.32/42s (italian byplane) turned up, of which all were assumed destroyed

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/3909/1111afghan3ay.jpg

Sa-13 & Scud. Najibullah recieved alot of toys to keep his soviet regenerated army fighting the mujahadeen, and it worked for 3 years, which is pretty remarkible in modern afghan history. After his govt colapsed, most of the SCUDs walked up into north-west afghanistan to dostum, and were good for parades and smacking the cr@p out of Kabul, but little else. Still quite a few around.

http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/7994/261381535mardayph5gt.jpg

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/842/scud19928ia.jpg

Afghan Army 1980s. an effective army in none but name, it was pretty close to wholesale colapse in the early 80s.

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/3349/t62kabulearly1980s1mf.jpg

soldier holding a captured british blowpipe missile. quite an accurate name, as these missiles "blew' massivly in downing aircraft.

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/1544/afghanistan039ug.jpg

BMD in kabul. A common misconception is that the soviets destroyed kabul. diddnt happen.

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/5713/afganistan60hi.jpg

now getting into what I specialise in!! Afghan airforce transport.

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/517/an26curlmi8hip8ys.jpg

Mig-21 Bagram. the 21 wassnt particularly well suited to operations in afghanistan, and was not utalised to the extent the Su-22 family was by the DRAAF.

If you get the chance, order the 2005 Russian blockbuster "Devyataya Rota" ("Ninth Company"). It deals with the final days of fighting in Afghanistan. It won all kinds of Oscar-esque awards in Russia. Unfortunately, I haven't found a company that sells a version of the movie that includes English subtitltes. Still, even if don't speak Russian, the film will give you an idea of how today's Russia views the war. It's a nicely shot piece -- not like the Soviet films you're accustomed to seeing.

Also, I forgot to let you guys know. There is a documentary I have on order from Ethnoscope films called "The Black Tulip". I guess Soviet soldiers called the cargo plane that carried the coffins back to Russia this name.

There are a couple U.S. stores that sell it online:

(RussianDVD.com - $21.99) http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=40205&genreid=&genresubid=

(SaintPetersburgStore.com - $21.99 (you'll need to speak Russian to navigate this site))
http://www.saintpetersburgstore.com/sell.asp/ItemId/42080/initcode/searchall/category/DVD/sc/153

No matter where you get it, make sure it says NTSC version - if you live in the U.S.

And so it begins...flame war again. It's pretty disgusting that you dont feel bad when any human being dies. It's becoming scary that such people like you exist don't care about your fellow human being because they're Russian/Chinese/etc. I am sorry, I forgot, the 13,000 soldiers who died in Afghanistan coincidentally were the same 13,000 people who installed puppet governments in your nations and forced communism onto you . Look, whatever your political opinions are, leave them out of here. These people are soldiers, they are people who fought for their nation proudly and unapologetically. Stop putting nation's ideologies on the heads of the soldiers! I don't particularily like the war in Iraq, nor do I like the American Government, does that mean I hate American troops? No! I am sad and proud each day that they die for their nation, just like I am sad and proud to see others die for their nation. Being a soldier means you don't question the reason, you don't say "But wait, I'm not communist, don't make me go". It doesn't matter the political ideology, what matters is the serving of your nation.

The people who did those things to your country, are not the same people who fought and died in Afghanistan. The soldiers who died in Afghanistan have nothing to do with that, so why do you show such disrespect? It's disgusting and I believe you are a horrible human being for showing such lack of respect.

Sometimes I feel like this about soldiers from other countries waging foreign wars, and when I do, I stop myself and think that perhaps they are no different from these boys, fighting battles that their government picked because they want to be on someone’s good side or get the visa restrictions lifted, or because of misconceived notion of national security, cheered on to spread freedom to the masses by appeals to their sense of international duty or some global liberal messianism. When I realise that, I understand that I am being infantile, petty, and cruel.

I'm going to try to be as polite as possible. But I can't not say anything with a statement like this. Firstly, remember that far more German civilians where killed by American and British polits then by soviet soldiers, and I guess you can argue for "the reason of beeing german". How can you equate the people who saved the world from Nazis with the Nazis.

Delta, thanks for putting this back on track.

A few posts back I mentioned a site that has a couple of films on the Soviet/Afghan conflict. They are pretty short, but are very good and available on DVD for fairly cheap. I just got mine on Friday. www.docfilm.com

The guy who runs the site Bruce "Pacho" Lane was the one who went to Afghanistan to get the footage/interviews back during the war.

has anyone seen a documentary called "AFGAN"
its about a western journalist who traveled with the Soviets on missions.

I forget who published the video, but its got very rare footage. I use to have a VHS. It came with 2 movies on it.

First was "AFGAN" and the other one "Lord of Kayan" about some crazy biker dude in Afghanistan.

The "Afgan" documentary shows the Soviet base, Soviet hospital, and than the journalist travels with the Russians in a convoy, and they get atacked, and you can hear RPG flying by their heads, but it didnt hit. The Russian officer in a BTR tells the camera right after the RPG flies by

"My American friend, you are lucky. If the rocket flew a few feet lower, you wouldnt be watching this movie right now."

The journalist also travels with the Spetsnaz on a mission.

Pretty cool documentary if anyone will find it.

It is western, with english subtitles and narrations. And its not biased at all.

DRAA parading early 1980s.....if your wondering why they look all of 15, during this time the army was plauged by massive defection (up to 2000 soldiers worth durign some defections!) to early 'psudo-mujahadeen' (though not in the incarnation that woudl be known later) though during the soviet intervention, it accomplished its goal of stopping the army from colapsing, and by wars end turning it into a confident, capible force.
