I like simple but striking banners: the Federal German flag (the black-red-gold is simply good looking - horizontal and in this order - out of some reason I don't find the Belgian flag very nice), the European Union flag (the circle of golden stars on deep blue background is perhaps the most beautiful of all), the Canadian one (making good use of the colors red and white and the maple leaf as a simple object), and those of Australia and New Zealand (deep blue with stars again - nice) the best looking flags.

i also find the german federal flag and the russian federation ones nice looking one as well. very striking and no complicated designs to mess it up.

No it's not good looking, simply because it is a twisted made up flag, that just used the imperial colours with no real tradition (A party symbol stamped on the imperial colours isn't the result of a rich tradition, but an ugly bastard)
If you like the colours, ok, but then don't choose the bastard form.

The beauty is Black, Red and Gold anyway, which stood for democracy from the 1830's on (Hambacher Fest). And first symbol of "der Deutsche Bund" in 1848.
Beauty is relative, I guess.

But the old German flags are much much stronger in appearance than black-red-gold (which is still okay). White makes a lot better contrast than gold.
Simple motives and good colours is what makes a good flag in my eyes.

That's why for example the Soviet flag is dull. Red and gold don't go together to well especially if the symbols are so small and not centred. Also there's not a good balance between the two colours. The new Russian flag is much better.

(Well not really a flag, but one of those things you hang off an opera house's VIP box.)

I have found a couple of strange flags about Portugal :)

It is the simbol of the Royal house of Austria when it rules over Castela, Aragon, Granada, Austria, Borgonha, Brabante, Portugal, Flandres and Tirol.

Props to the guys who posted the Portuguese Empire flags. Good stuff. Out of curiosity does anyone know what those blue things are with the white dots (they look like dominoes to me)?

The Templar emblem is very cool too, how it went from a Crusader's symbol, to being emblazoned on the sails and banners of Portuguese ships during the Age of Discovery, and is now the national insignia on their aircraft.
