Hey, my uncle is a western artist who does everything from bronzes to paintings, and is quite good(presented George Dubya with his own bronze). For his next project, he says he's doing a mural type thing for each of the 4 major services(sorry USCG, no offense). He's not very computer savvy, so he told me to find him the BIGGEST, MOST EXPENSIVE, IN DEPTH, DETAILED "coffee table" type books. He is basically looking for great pictures so that one would be able to look at the mural and say "oh, thats Airforce...Navy...Army...USMC." It would also help if these books had a little history. ALSO, if any of you have any ideas or suggestions of things you've always wanted to be captured on canvas, please let me know.

Email me directly at seanr@cox.net

*I will try to post some pics of other work he has done so you know he is legit and extremely talented*

Not to be a smartass, but Barnes and Noble usually has a good selection.

Yes, I am also going to search the regular bookstores and such...just wanted to see what any U.S.(not Canadian) military had for me. Don't worry about it Trigger, that was not a smartass comment.

*here come some pics*

This one is titled the "Texas Skip." I believe it was given to the president on the day that Uday and Qusay were killed.

This bronze sits in front of a new fire department in Chula Vista, which was opened on September 11th, 2003. This fountain, along with the entire Fire Station, is built in honor of all fire fighters and especially those heroes of 9/11.

Buffalo Bill-just another neat bronze he's done.

Men of the Dust-just some badass cowboys.

Let me know if you want more.

Well I would say look for these:

"The Air Force"

"The Army"

"The Navy"

"The Marines"

These are huge leather covered books with each service's seal smacked on the font in shining plastic (but it does not look cheap).

Check out amazon.com to see what the books look like and the sizes and such (eg, The AF one is 368 pages of 100 % full color artwork, pictures, and text, and is over 14" X 11" X 1.6" the others are about the same)

I have "The Air Force" and its a perfect desktop book (I also know a number of the people who helped write it too ;) )

I've seen those at Local Sam's Clubs too. Huge book.

Ask your dad if he has seen the photo's of the Marine holding the child right after her mother was killed. I think stores have some "2003 Year in pictures" time books by Time. That photo really cuts deep for me. The look on the Marine's face, the incredibly heavy feeling of despair in that moment when you realize what happened. It shows how our fighting force can experience casualties without physical injury. That man's life is scarred forever.
Anyone have that photo?

Photo I mentioned is of a Navy Corpsman, Richard Barnett.. March 24, 2003 holding an Iraqi boy.

This one could definitely be used for the Navy painting(to show a little more than aircraft carriers, and sailors). Great pic

Yeah, that is the one. The look on this Corpsman's face is surreal. You can almost see the weight of emotional despair and shock in the Marines standing in the background. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes.
It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it.
Robert E. Lee (1807 - 1870)

Some other imagery that your Uncle could use is the photos of troops and people during the big windstorm that put much of the war on pause in Iraq. The colors alone would make really great reference for art.
I don't think your Uncle's style would match well, but the night vision images that we see sometimes would make really interesting art. Taking the green and black image and adding textures with oil would be really great. Adding depth that isn't really there.

I like the NV idea, I'll let him know...if not just send him some pics of some examples through NVG's. He would probably be able to adapt to that style with ease. Give him some clay or paint and he'll make you a masterpiece. I believe that these paintings are going to be made into lithographs as well. I'm not really sure what will happen with all these lithographs...all he told me is that a congressman friend of his is helping him get this done and they are for military families or something. ??

Here's a link to some of his stuff...

The bronze busts are awsome. Think he could do some full figure stuff of troops?

Also, another image that comes to mind is those images of troops in prayer, and 3rd ID soldiers with the Patch on their helmet.
I have an image in mind for the full figure bronze. Give me some time.

SeanR

I am surprised he hasn't done one of the troops yet. He has so many projects that you or I would look at and say "fantastic!", but then he says "No man, I just started that, needs alot of work." He has done a bust of Chesty Puller that was presented to USMC Gen. Krulak though. I will ask him if he has plans on one for the troops.
He just finished a bronze similar to the firemen that is of two police officers. It will be like the firemen one:displayed in front of a new Police Dept. in Chula Vista, CA.

Even though he probably already knows how he wants it, email me any pics for ideas and I will relay them to him.

Absolutely, I like how the (paratrooper right?) has all his gear on, and his kneepad on his ankle like he's definitely been movin'. He'd love this shot. This guy is just kneeling for rest or something right? There is no story behind it?

Jesus that is a gigantic photo.

*and by the way, when this project is complete I will find someway to show all you guys the finished products.

I was wrong about Sam's... It was Costco.

Some other ideas.. could be some of the images of Iraqi's waving US flags as they see Soldiers come to their village. I posted one on the protester thread.

I always liked the "flag in the cockpits" pictures. The A-10 one was just taken a few days ago before it flew a mission in Afghanistan.

Look around at the various service websites (eg www.af.mil, ect for each service).

They have tons of photos and they are updated every day. They also have zero copyright issues.

F-15C at a forward location.

(oh, you can also find those AF, Navy, Army, Marines books at Costco--but they might not have all at once. I got my AF one at Costco around December 2002 for a really good price)

How about some form of artwork of those weapons of mass destruction that we heard so much of, I bet those would go down well in the USA or UK LOL

Another book which may interest you is LIFE's War in Iraq: The Illustrated History (ISBN: 1-932273-13-1). Although it's not a great big book, it has some bloody good photos in it. Here's some scans I just quickly did (Hence the poor quality. Note: Not to scale.)...
