The F-22 was cancelled, in favor of the Tie Fighter.

Looks official, the F-35 Lightning II. Straight from the manufacturer.
That'll be really confusing as I remember before Raptor, the F-22 was refered to as Lightning II. Whether that was an official thing or not, I'm not sure.

I think the F-22 is going to be called the "Raptor" now. I heard that it may be given the designation "F/A-22"

It was called the F/A-22 for poltical reasons, but now that it has entered service the Air force have gone back to F-22A, for traditional reasons.

In other breaking news, the US Army has just adopted a black plastic rifle designed by this guy Eugene Stoner. Initial reports indicate that the troops want their M14s back.

Whats wrong with the Lightning 2 though??? Its a LOT better than the alternatives they were looking at, I was kind of relieved when that was announced.
nice photo link, waiting to see the new paint in action though... maybey after the testing on the first production model we will see something...
will be interesting on what they will optimise, after testing...
theres already a thread about the name a while back...

Lightning II is a great name for the JSF. On the American side, the P-38 Lighting I was a Lockheed aircraft, which is now creator of the JSF. On the British side, there was the English Electric Lightning. And BAE is connected with the old English Electric through a weird series of take over, de-merger, and merger.
BTW, Boeing acquired North American in 1996, so they might have used Mustang II for the X/F-32.
