Yeah, lots of practice shooting at open fields.. Durr.

The Western media makes it seem as if Israel is turning Gaza and Lebanon into two black spots on the map, yet they're holding back immensely. Too much, I'd say.

12 years ago, on the 25 th of august, we did the official presentation of the Leclerc in Paris and the 50's anniversary of the entry of the 2 ème DB in Paris.
Even if it does look a little bit "light " compared to the Merkava, I like the tank, it is really beautiful, and seems pretty lethal.

What impressed me the most is the new plane of the French Air Force, I named the Rafale as well as
the new combat helicopter of the French Army that is to say the Tiger!
If not as a whole I believe that it was the best parade that I saw! :D

Here you can find a video and a couple of photographs about the Rafale! (http://www.dassault-aviation.com/actualite/actualite/article.cfm?id=2687)

Is France the last western country that regularly has a real military parade anymore?

No. Greece holds 2 Military Parades per Year
1) October 28th in Thessaloniki (we celebrate the "NO" Metaxas said to the Italian Ambassador in 1940, for not allowing Italian troops to set foot in Greece)

and

2) March 25th in Athens (March 25th 1821-Declaration of War against the Ottoman Turks)

We're hoping that Israel continues to vigorously defend herself and refuse negotiations with Hezbollah and Hamas for the kidnapped Israeli soldiers. In our cartoon "Non-negotiable" (http://www.coxandforkum.com/archives/000877.html) we celebrated such an aggressive response. But it should be remembered that the terrorists' tactics have worked for them in the past. A FoxNews article (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,203076,00.html) yesterday noted this fact in passing:

Israel has carried out several prisoner swaps with Hezbollah in the past to obtain freedom for captures Israelis. These include a January 2004 swap in which an Israeli civilian and the bodies of three Israeli soldiers were exchanged for 436 Arab prisoners and the bodies of 59 Lebanese fighters. In 1985, three Israeli soldiers captured in Lebanon in 1982 were traded for 1,150 Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners. The Jewish Virtual Library has more on the issue: Israel-Hizbollah Prisoner Exchange (2004) (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Society_&_Culture/prisonerswap012904.html):

In exchange for the bodies of three Israeli soldiers, missing since October 2000, and one Israeli businessman, abducted in October 2000 under questionable circumstances, Israel released more than 430 Arab prisoners on January 29, 2004. Those released by Israel included 400 Palestinian prisoners who were released to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Another 29 prisoners from Arab nations, and a German-citizen who worked with Hizbollah, were flown to Germany and then most went to Lebanon. In addition, the bodies of approximately 60 Lebanese terrorists were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross at the Israel-Lebanon border near Rosh Hanikra. The prisoner exchange was the latest example of Israel's determination to bring its soldiers home, dead or alive. In 1985, Israel freed 1,150 prisoners in exchange for three Israeli soldiers kidnapped in Lebanon by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)-General Command. Many of the Arabs who were freed became leaders in the first Palestinian intifada. ...
In the wake of the morning rush hour bus bombing in Jerusalem's upscale Rehavia neighborhood, some last minute voices were heard urging the government to stop the prisoner swap. MK Aryeh Eldad (National Union) told Maariv, "Yesterday this murderous organization promised us a 'surprise,' so we must stop the release of 400 terrorists before we discover that they've put us in a death trap." According to Dr. Shmuel Bar, a senior research fellow at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, the message this swap sends to the Palestinians is that "the only way in which anyone can succeed in freeing prisoners is Hezbollah's way of abducting Israeli soldiers and citizens … We're going to be sorry for this."

The Intelligence & Terrorism Information Center (http://www.terrorism-info.org.il/engsite/html/search.asp?isSearch=yes&isT8=yes&searchText=T104&pid=167&sid=13&preview=) has more information on Hezbollah's ongoing war against Israel.

Old tradition of the Legion.
Those who are sporting beard are selected legionnaires who receive the honour to carry the tradition of the legion's pionneers, building soldiers who wear also a leather a**** and an ax.
They are at the front of the parade by tradition since the great napoleonian army, and also because the parade pace of the Legion is slower than the rest of the army.

EMIA, Sait Cyr, ECole Polytechnique?

Different schools, different military specialties.

Polytechnique's forte is engineering (and used to provide lots of artillery officers), Saint Cyr is an officer school (like West Point), Saint Maixent is a NCO school, you also have specialized schools for military doctors, police officers, etc.

Bye ;)

Did you visit the CPA 10 stand at Les Invalides? It was fantastic.

The parade was excellent as usual, but the organization was a bit crappy, especially for those of us who aren't familiar with the proceedings. I got up at 0500 and arrived at Champs Élysées at about 0600, and found a briliant spot, right beside the VIP stands. Then we were told we couldn't stand beside the railings and had to move further up towards Arc de Triomphe. By the time (around 2 hours later) I went throught the security check so we could stand by the goddaln railings, I had been precedeed by a few thousand Chinese tourists who had ambled by at 10 o'clock. I ended up have to crane my neck and peep through three rows of heads, and my photos were ****.

What really struck me was the way in which the people welcomed the military, especially when the Sapeurs-Pompiers passed by. People were applauding them and cheering as if they were stars. Listening to the French media, you would think no one gives a **** about the armed forces. On apprend toujours, eh Vener6....

The afternoon was more fruitful. Great atmosphere chez CPA 10, very friendly NCO and all. I'll post the pics in a separate gigantic thread. Oh and fantastic freefall display, with pinpoint accuracy.

So Poles, Russians, Czechs, Serbs, Croats, Slovaks etc. and so on make up to 34% of the whole Foreign Legion, that's a lot.

You know, there are some people who come to have a new life, a better life and which wants to start again to zero! Perhaps in their fatherland they have had problems with justice or even with their own army! They were disgusted of their country or I don't know what and they prefer to come in the Foreign Legion because the legion like the French Army have values! Yes, but your shoot is missed! p-) The only thing that you made it's to have made a big hole in the ground! With Leclerc it's not the case! Because it can always follow a target and make fire on the target while rolling to 60 km/h! The more so as recharging is automatic step as the M1-ABRAMS where it's with manual recharging! But good, Leclerc isn't comparable by report to the other tank (or perhaps with the Leopard) because it makes party of a new generation! The M1-ABRAMS is more comparable with a T-90!

Nope, standard OD battle dress. Their whites are only for "show" and going home or admin duties.

Givati Infantry Brigade used to call itself Israel's Marines, but I'm not sure it's true anymore. Don't know if anything in their training included real amphibious work.

In basic we had a sargeant who made us play Iwo Jima for 5 hours when we were at the beach near Hadera. He had us wading into the Med in full pack up to our necks, walking around for 5-10 minutes at that depth and then charge the beach ala John Wayne. All we could think of was how much rust and sand we'd need to remove from our Galils and MAGs.
