You know, starting from the day when you enlisted, covering the time you got trained and the great day when you finally got to fight against the evildoers? Just to give liberal hippies like me an idea of what the war is really like.

Some people just fail to see that war is bad for both sides. In the movies, you see the Americans effortlessly shooting down the enemy, without taking any losses. That's why movies such as Blackhawk Down and We Were Soldiers need to exist. Americans need a reminder that American soldiers are mortals and they do get killed in combat. The Armed Forces isn't one big boy scout troop. Death happens, tt's simply a part of war.

But then there are types who do see war is bad and doesn't want any carnage on any side. This mindset existed during pre-WWII. Europe didn't want to go and take down Germany. They thought ignoring it would make Hitler go away. Oops! There goes Poland and many Poles going to the death camps. The enemy we're facing won't stop until the West is either destroyed or turns to Islam. The world will take neither.

I think it's better to take the fight to the terrorists in a combat situation than to have them sneaking inside our borders. It's better to put trained soldiers willing to put their lives on the line to fight terrorists in combat than to have innocent civilians fall victim to an attack.

Except the problem is the civilians in Iraq are not happy. They have a right to be angry. Afghanistan is a model on how War on Terror campaigns should be like. It was an international effort, the country was a huge tribal mess (Iraq was stable before we came), the people wanted to be liberated due to harsh oppression (Saddam was rather secular and you were safe if you didn't say much), we let the Northern Alliance do most of the liberating. Iraq could've waited.
