I'll be doing my GCSEs this summer and will be joining the army (Royal Engineers) at some point. As I am starting to get over my depression, and a little reluctant to join right after I finish school. My Dad has got some info about a uniformed services course at college. It lasts two years and [so the guy says] will be able to join the Royal Engineers if I complete the course no matter what GCSEs I get.
Just wondering if anyone else [from Britain] has done/had a friend do/or is going to do a uniformed services course at college? To give me an idea of what it's like and if it's any good?
Cheers

My cousin did something like this he was told that he stood a better chance of becoming an officer. After college and joining up, everyone else told him it was a waste of time and felt the same way himself, he wished he had went to Uni instead or had tried a bit of travelling, its only a few years ago that he got his commision and he has been in since the late 80's.
I also had a cousin do the same thing, he's now a policeman in the RAF.
He did that at the same time I was doing an electrical and mechanical engineering course, in regards to the actual workload, there's no comparison, while I was writing technical reports and blowing up capacitors he was pretty much told "turn up 75% of the time and you'll pass with distinctions". However, if you get through that course and then for whatever reason don't get into the forces you've got a qualification that is of pretty much no other use, it won't really help you get a job anywhere else.
Please bear in mind this is secondhand information (From my cousin to me), it's also six years old so you can't rely on it, your best bet is to go to the college you want to attend and try and find some kids already on the course and ask their opinion.
